Alpha Legion (XX Legion) - Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005-014.M31)
The Alpha Legion embraced deception and mutability in their appearance, making their heraldry one of the most variable among the Legions. Their armour schemes were deliberately inconsistent to sow confusion.
Primary Colours (Heresy Era): Azure blue (sea blue/turquoise) with silver or metallic trim, often accented with emerald green. Earlier/Pre-Heresy variants included indigo, pale grey, steel, veridian, or combinations. They frequently used camouflage, false liveries of other Legions, or unmarked armour for infiltration.
Legion Armourial/Badge: The Laernean Hydra (multi-headed serpent, often coiled or striking, with heads representing regeneration and multiplicity). Earlier symbols included the Alpha-Omega (Aleph-Null) device with chains or links, derived from ancient Terran scripts. These could appear in multiple styles or be absent entirely.
Tactical Markings: Highly fluid. Chain links (number often indicating rank or unit), cryptic runes, Helac script, or false squad/Chapter symbols. They mimicked other Legions' markings. No fixed "standard" beyond the hydra; anonymity and misdirection were key.
Hazard/Decorative: Minimal compared to Iron Warriors; focus on subtle or deceptive elements. Operatives sometimes bore hidden hydra tattoos.
Their aesthetic prioritized functionality and subterfuge over uniformity—armour could appear as any Legion or none at all.
Alpha Legion used standard Legiones Astartes structures but obscured them. They favoured Mk II Crusade, Mk IV Maximus, and specialised infiltration gear, with extensive use of cameleoline, false heraldry, and covert modifications.
Rank Indicators: Often hidden or variable. Chain links on armour (more links = higher status). Crested helms (vertical for high ranks/Praetors, horizontal for Sergeants+). Pteruges for Centurions+. Many officers used no visible distinctions to maintain operational security.
Elite/Veterans: More ornate but deceptive iconography, advanced bionics, or unique wargear (e.g., power daggers, Banestrike ammunition). Harrowmasters and Heads of the Hydra had personal variants.
General: Heavy use of stealth tech, disguises, and non-standard loadouts. True identities often known only through internal codes or hydra tattoos.
The XX Legion was one of the last unified with its primarch(s). Raised on Terra, it operated in isolation during early Crusade phases, possibly as a strategic reserve or for special operations. It earned early renown for infiltration, sabotage, and multi-vector warfare.
Alpharius (and twin Omegon) was the last primarch found. The Legion grew rapidly under their command and became masters of espionage and asymmetric warfare. They joined Horus' rebellion, participating in key actions like the Drop Site Massacre at Isstvan V (ambush and pursuit roles), the invasion of Paramar, and various diversionary campaigns. Their loyalties remained ambiguous—even within the Legion—with elements potentially pursuing hidden agendas aligned with the Emperor or long-term Imperium survival.
By 014.M31, they conducted deep raids, false-flag operations, and internal disruptions across the galaxy. Their true strength and allegiance were never fully known, embodying the hydra's regenerative, multi-headed nature. They were active in the Solar War and events leading to Terra, often as saboteurs and spies.
Specialty: Infiltration, sabotage, insurgency, counter-insurgency, surprise assaults, and multi-vector attacks. Masters of misdirection, espionage, and striking where least expected. They blended conventional and unconventional warfare seamlessly.
Tactics: Ambush, terror, assassination, false-flag operations, and coordinated strikes from multiple directions. Extensive use of cultists, sleeper agents, and Legionaries in disguise. They excelled at disrupting supply lines, sowing paranoia, and exploiting weaknesses through intelligence. Armoured spearheads supported by infiltration teams were common (e.g., Paramar). "Mutable tactics" allowed rapid adaptation.
Preferred Weapons: Standard Legion wargear with emphasis on precision and stealth—bolters (especially Banestrike ammunition for anti-Astartes work), power daggers, volkite, plasma, melta, and sniper weapons. Harrower Terminators, Headhunter kill-teams, Effrit Disruption Cadres, and specialised vehicles (e.g., Kharybdis). Sabotage tools, poisons, and exotic tech were favoured over brute siege equipment.
Pragmatic, cunning, and always operating with layers of deception—"I am Alpharius" philosophy extended to tactics.
Alpharius & Omegon: Twin Primarchs. Embodiment of the Legion's duality and secrecy. Alpharius often the public face; Omegon the shadow. Master manipulators.
Ingo Pech: First Captain, loyal to the Legion's core goals.
Sheed Ranko: Captain, often involved in high-risk operations.
Armillus Dynat: Harrowmaster, shock/assault specialist.
Autilon Skorr: Notable operative/commander.
Others: Phocron (Headhunter Prime), Exodus (assassin/infiltrator), various "Alpharius" impersonators, and cell commanders whose true names remain unknown due to the Legion's nature.
The Alpha Legion remains the most enigmatic of the Legiones Astartes. Their actions during the Heresy blurred lines between traitor and loyalist, victory and defeat. "Hydra Dominatus!" (We are everywhere.)
