Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005–014.M31)
Heraldry & Iconography
The Blood Angels are one of the most visually striking Legions in the Imperium. Their armour is painted in a deep, lustrous crimson red that symbolises both the sacred blood of the Emperor and the dangerous genetic curse they bear. Gold, black, and white serve as primary accents, giving them an almost angelic, aristocratic appearance even in the midst of brutal warfare.
Legion Symbol: A golden-winged blood drop (a single crimson teardrop with outstretched angelic wings). Usually displayed prominently on the left pauldron.
Company Markings: Right pauldron or knee pad displays company number or unique heraldic devices.
Squad Markings: Tactical arrows, numbers, and battlefield role symbols on the right knee in contrasting colours.
Helmet Colour Conventions:
Tactical / Battleline: Deep red
Assault / Vanguard: Gold or bright yellow
Devastator / Fire Support: Deep blue or black
Veterans & Command Staff: Gold with white or black accents
Sanguinary Guard: Entirely ornate golden armour with white wing motifs, red jewels, and master-crafted details.
Death Company (emerging in late Heresy): Entirely black armour with red crosses, blood drops, and skull iconography — a visible manifestation of the growing Black Rage.
Additional decorative elements include purity seals, blood drop icons, skeletal wings, and extensive personal artistry reflecting the Legion’s cultured nature.
Armour Rank Distinctions
Battle-Brothers: Standard Mk IV or Mk V power armour in crimson with minimal trim.
Sergeants: Black pauldron trim with gold or red laurels.
Veteran Sergeants: Heavy gold trim and honour markings.
Lieutenants / Centurions: Ornate gold shoulder plates and personal heraldry.
Captains: Highly elaborate golden armour elements, command crests, and relic breastplates.

Summary of History (Horus Heresy – 005–014.M31)
The IX Legion was originally known as the Revenant Legion, a savage and flawed formation used for the most brutal compliance actions. Their early gene-seed was unstable, leading to extreme aggression. Upon reuniting with Primarch Sanguinius on Baal, the Legion underwent a dramatic transformation. Sanguinius instilled ideals of nobility, art, and martial perfection, renaming them the Blood Angels.
During the Great Crusade they became one of the most celebrated Legions, admired across the Imperium for their grace and effectiveness. However, the hidden Red Thirst — an overwhelming craving for blood — plagued them in secret.
Key events during the Horus Heresy (005–014.M31):
The Legion answered the call to arms when Horus betrayed the Emperor.
They were deliberately sent by Horus into the Signus Campaign (a daemonic trap) to awaken and exploit their genetic flaw. The campaign nearly broke the Legion but ultimately hardened them.
Sanguinius and much of the Legion fought valiantly across multiple war zones, becoming beacons of hope.
During the Siege of Terra, Sanguinius performed legendary feats, defending the Imperial Palace and duelling traitors.
The tragic climax came when Sanguinius boarded the Vengeful Spirit and was slain by Horus. This event would trigger the full emergence of the Black Rage across the Blood Angels, cursing them for millennia.
