IRON HANDS – X LEGION

Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005–014.M31)

Heraldry & Iconography
The Iron Hands are defined by their cold, industrial, and merciless aesthetic. Their armour is primarily black (symbolising unyielding iron and machine purity), with accents of silver, steel grey, white, and red. Their appearance is heavily augmented, mechanical, and utilitarian.

  • Legion Symbol: A clenched iron gauntlet (often shown crushing a world or lightning bolt) or the Medusan skull with mechanical elements.

  • Company Markings: Clan Companies are identified by unique clan symbols (Clan Raukaan, Clan Morragul, Clan Vurgaan, etc.) rather than simple numbers.

  • Squad Markings: Extensive use of mechanical cog icons, rivets, hazard stripes, and binary code. Many warriors display their cybernetic augmentations openly.

  • Helmet Colours:

    • Tactical / Battleline: Black with silver or red accents

    • Assault / Vanguard: Red or white

    • Devastator / Heavy: Silver or gunmetal

    • Veterans & Command: Heavy silver or white trim with extensive clan markings.

  • Additional Elements: Heavy use of exposed machinery, bionics, iron rivets, purity seals stamped with binary cant, and clan totems. Many warriors replace entire limbs or organs with augmetics.

Armour Rank Distinctions

  • Battle-Brothers: Standard Mk IV or Mk V black power armour with visible mechanical joints and silver trim.

  • Sergeants: Silver pauldron borders with clan runes.

  • Veteran Sergeants / Lieutenants: Heavy silver and red trim with multiple augmetics on display.

  • Captains / Iron Fathers: Ornate black armour with extensive bionics, iron gauntlet motifs, and clan crests.

  • Clan Commanders: Near-artificer armour almost entirely replaced with cybernetics and heavy plating.

  • Terminators (Ironsworn): Massive black and silver relic armour with heavy mechanical reinforcement.

  • Techmarines & Iron Fathers: Red and black armour with prominent servo-arms and Omnissiah symbols.

Summary of History (Horus Heresy – 005–014.M31)
The X Legion, the Iron Hands, hail from the harsh world of Medusa. Reunited with their Primarch Ferrus Manus (the Gorgon), they embraced a creed of iron and flesh — the belief that the weakness of the flesh must be replaced by the strength of the machine.

During the Great Crusade they earned a reputation as relentless, uncompromising warriors who would rather die than show weakness. They were masters of armoured and technological warfare.

Key events during the Horus Heresy (005–014.M31):

  • The Iron Hands were one of the three Legions ambushed at the Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V.

  • Ferrus Manus was slain in battle by Fulgrim — an event that scarred the Legion deeply and intensified their hatred of weakness and their obsession with augmentation.

  • The Legion became fractured. Many companies operated independently under the doctrine of “the flesh is weak,” leading to increasingly extreme cybernetic modifications.

  • They fought a bitter campaign of vengeance against the Emperor’s Children and other Traitors.

  • By the Siege of Terra, surviving Iron Hands were among the most heavily augmented and relentless Loyalist forces, driven by cold rage and the memory of their fallen Primarch.

The Iron Hands are defined by cold logic, hatred of weakness, and the mantra “The Flesh is Weak.” Their grief over Ferrus Manus and growing machine obsession make them one of the most tragic Loyalist Legions.

Weapons & Tactics
The Iron Hands favour armoured assault, heavy firepower, and unyielding attrition. They fight with machine-like precision and cold fury.

Core Tactical Doctrines:

  • Heavy use of tanks, Dreadnoughts, and armoured columns.

  • Methodical, grinding advances supported by overwhelming firepower.

  • Replacement of biological weakness with cybernetic strength.

  • Relentless pursuit of vengeance with no regard for losses.

Signature Weapons & Formations:

  • Gorgon Pattern Power Armour and heavy augmentations.

  • Master-crafted Power Fists, Lightning Claws, and Siege Weapons.

  • Extensive use of Predators, Land Raiders, Sicaran Tanks, and Dreadnoughts.

  • Iron Father Techmarines and heavily augmented Ironsworn Terminators.

  • Medusan Immortals and Clan-based assault formations.

  • Heavy Bolters, Lascannons, and Plasma weaponry.
