Raven Guard (XIX Legion)

Raven Guard (XIX Legion) – Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005-014.M31)

Heraldry and Colour Scheme

Primary colours: Charcoal black / midnight black power armour with white or pale grey accents and trim. Often heavily weathered and battle-damaged to blend into shadows.

Legion symbol: A white raven (or corvid) with spread wings, sometimes depicted in a stylised screaming or diving pose. Many warriors incorporated lightning bolts, claw marks, or subtle eye motifs.

Common decorations: Minimalist and practical. Extensive use of camouflage patterns, battle damage left unrepaired as marks of honour, and white "death masks" or skull imagery on helmets. Veterans often had more white markings. They avoided ostentatious decoration, favouring functionality and stealth. Vehicles were painted in similar black/grey schemes with raven iconography and often carried smoke/ambush modifications.

The overall aesthetic was that of shadowy predators – silent, grim, and unrelenting.

Armour Rank Distinctions

The Raven Guard operated with a flexible, merit-based structure suited to guerrilla and infiltration warfare. They retained standard Legiones Astartes ranks but with a strong emphasis on autonomy for field commanders.

  • Standard ranks: Legionary (Battle-Brother) → Sergeant → Shadow Captain / Lieutenant → Captain.

  • Veterancy markers: More white markings on armour, master-crafted gear, and personal honour scars or repaired battle damage. "Pale" or white shoulder trim for veterans.

  • Mor Deythan ("Shadow Wardens"): Elite stealth and reconnaissance specialists, often operating as independent operatives or in small kill-teams. Highly customised armour with enhanced stealth systems.

  • Deliverers / Jump Pack Assault: Raptor-equivalent assault troops; many wore modified jump packs with silent-running adaptations.

  • Other distinctions: Company-specific subtle markings (often ravens or numerals in white), officers with more ornate but still functional helms (some with beak-like visors), and extensive use of cameleoline cloaks and stealth fields. Sergeants sometimes identified by helmet crests or specific lightning patterns.

Rank was proven through successful operations rather than parade-ground protocol. Corax encouraged initiative and independent thought.

Summary of History (Heresy-Era Focus)

The XIX Legion originated from Terran recruits drawn from shadowed underhives and penal sources, excelling in stealth, sabotage, and hit-and-run operations. They earned early fame for efficient, low-casualty compliances.

Primarch Corvus Corax was discovered on Deliverance (Kiavahr moon), a prison world where he led a rebellion using guerrilla tactics. A master of stealth and liberation, he reformed the Legion into a precision instrument of shadow warfare. The Raven Guard adopted Deliverance as their homeworld and integrated its techno-tribes.

Pre-Heresy, they were known for surgical strikes and avoiding unnecessary attrition. Corax was close to brothers like Vulkan and Ferrus Manus but clashed with more brutal primarchs.

During the Horus Heresy: The Raven Guard were one of the three loyalist Legions ambushed at Isstvan V (Drop Site Massacre). They suffered devastating losses, with much of the Legion annihilated by the traitor forces (especially the Iron Warriors, Word Bearers, and Night Lords). Corax was badly wounded but escaped with survivors.

In the aftermath, Corax retreated to Deliverance and used forbidden genetic techniques (with help from the Emperor's own archives) to rapidly rebuild the Legion via the "Raptor" project. This produced faster but often flawed warriors (many became the mutated "Raptor" mutants). The rebuilt Raven Guard waged a bitter shadow war across the galaxy, conducting raids, assassinations, and supply-line disruptions against Horus' forces. They contributed to several key campaigns leading to the Siege of Terra, always operating as elusive guerrillas rather than a line Legion.

Corax remained loyal and deeply haunted by the losses at Isstvan. The Legion stayed relatively small but extremely effective in asymmetric warfare throughout the Heresy.

Weapons and Tactics

Tactics: Supreme masters of stealth, infiltration, sabotage, and guerrilla warfare. They struck from shadows, used diversionary attacks, sabotage, and rapid hit-and-fade operations. Preferred night fighting, drop-pod insertions, jump-pack assaults, and reconnaissance-in-force. They avoided prolonged engagements, focusing on decapitation strikes, terrorising enemy commanders, and disrupting logistics. "Strike from the shadows, vanish without trace."

Common weapons/equipment (Heresy era):

  • Signature weapons: Bolters with silencers, sniper weapons, power claws/lightning claws, chainglaives, and extensive use of cameleoline, stealth fields, and disruptor technology.

  • Specialist: Volkite, plasma, and melta for precision strikes. Heavy use of jump packs for Raptors/Deliverers.

  • Elite gear: Mor Deythan with advanced stealth armour and unique wargear. Corax's own "Shadow Armour" (prototype stealth plate with integrated systems).

  • Vehicles: Modified Land Speeders, Storm Eagles, Thunderhawks with stealth modifications, Rhinos, and Drop Pods. Minimal heavy armour reliance; they favoured speed and mobility (Sabres, Sicarans in supporting roles).

Corax himself was a terrifying close-combatant, wielding dual lightning claws and his "Sable Blade."

Notable Members (Heresy Era)

  • Corvus Corax (Raven Lord): Primarch. Master of shadows, liberation fighter, and tactical genius. Deeply affected by Isstvan and the failures of the Raptor project. Fought at the forefront of guerrilla campaigns.

  • Branne Nev (Shadow Captain): Commander of the 9th Company (later involved in rebuilding efforts). Key survivor and field leader.

  • Agapito Nev: Brother to Branne, another senior captain who led effective raids.

  • Other captains: Alik Corswain (various commands), various Shadow Captains of the surviving companies.

  • Mor Deythan leaders: Elite operatives like those who performed high-risk assassinations and reconnaissance.

  • Notable survivors: Figures such as the "Raptor" leaders and mutated warriors who fought despite their flaws.

  • Other figures: Techmarines who maintained the Legion's advanced stealth technology; Apothecaries critical to the gene-seed recovery and Raptor project.

The Raven Guard exemplified the Emperor's ideal of the unseen blade – patient, precise, and deadly. Their survival and continued resistance after near-annihilation at Isstvan V stands as one of the great loyalist achievements of the Heresy.

For the Emperor!
