Salamanders (XVIII Legion)

Salamanders (XVIII Legion) – Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005-014.M31)

Heraldry and Colour Scheme

Primary colours: Draconic green (deep emerald to forest green) power armour with black or obsidian trim, brass/gold accents, and flame motifs.

Legion symbol: A coiled or rearing salamander wreathed in flames, often combined with hammer and anvil iconography.

Common decorations: Flame patterns, scale textures, draconic heads, forge hammers, anvils, and volcanic/forge imagery. Battle damage is proudly displayed and often repaired with gold or brass. Vehicles are heavily adorned with flame motifs, draconic gargoyles, and honour banners. The overall look is noble, heavily armoured, and fire-forged.

Armour Rank Distinctions

The Salamanders used a merit- and honour-based system influenced by the Promethean Cult of Nocturne.

  • Standard ranks: Fire-Brother (Legionary) → Sergeant → Captain → Lord Captain / Chapter Master equivalents.

  • Pyre Guard: Primarch Vulkan’s elite personal honour guard. Wore the most ornate Artificer armour with prominent flame and draconic motifs, master-crafted weapons, and heavy flamers.

  • Firedrakes: Elite 1st Company Terminators. Heavily armoured veterans in Cataphractii or Tartaros plate, featuring reinforced draconic scaling and heavy flame weaponry.

  • Other distinctions: Black or gold trim for veterans, company-specific flame patterns or numerals, helmet crests for sergeants, and extensive honour markings (purity seals, campaign badges, and forged totems). Techmarines and Librarians displayed prominent forge or flame psychic iconography.

Promotion emphasised endurance, craftsmanship, and the protection of humanity.

Summary of History (Heresy-Era Focus)

One of the smallest Legions due to their high standards and attrition in brutal campaigns. Initially recruited from Terra’s volcanic and industrial zones, the Legion was later reinforced almost exclusively from the death world Nocturne.

Primarch Vulkan was discovered on Nocturne. A perpetual and master craftsman, he taught his sons the Promethean Creed — self-improvement through struggle, the nobility of the common man, and the duty to protect the weak. The Salamanders became known for humanitarian efforts during compliances and excelling in the harshest environments (volcanic, rad-wastes, boarding actions).

During the Horus Heresy: The Salamanders were one of the three loyalist Legions brutally ambushed at the Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V. They suffered catastrophic losses. Vulkan was believed slain (actually captured and horrifically tortured by Konrad Curze) but eventually escaped. The shattered Legion refused to break. Survivors formed small, determined strike forces and continued fighting throughout the Heresy, notably contributing to the defence of Terra. They remained unwaveringly loyal, never turning to Chaos, and focused on endurance and retribution.

Weapons and Tactics

Tactics: Experts in close-range attritional warfare, zone mortalis (shipboard, urban, bunker) fighting, and extreme-environment battles. They favoured relentless, methodical advances supported by overwhelming flame and melta firepower. Strong emphasis on combined-arms assaults, stubborn defence, and never abandoning civilians or brothers. “Fire and hammer” — burn the enemy, then crush the remnants.

Common weapons/equipment:

  • Signature weapons: Flamers, heavy flamers, meltaguns, multimeltas, and Promethean forge weapons.

  • Close combat: Thunder hammers, power mauls, draconic blades, and chainswords.

  • Elite gear: Firedrakes with heavy flamers and power fists/mauls; Pyre Guard with ornate dragon-scale armour and master-crafted weapons.

  • Vehicles: Flame-heavy tanks (Flamestorm cannons), Vindicators, Land Raiders, Rhinos, and Dreadnoughts (many interred heroes continued fighting).

  • Vulkan’s wargear: Dawnbringer (legendary thunder hammer), Vulkan’s Shield, and countless master-crafted artefacts he forged himself.

Notable Members (Heresy Era)

  • Vulkan: Primarch. Immortal craftsman, humanitarian, and one of the most compassionate Primarchs. Endured unimaginable torture yet remained loyal.

  • Artellus Numeon: First Captain and leader of the Pyre Guard. Fiery and devoted; carried Vulkan’s relics after Isstvan V.

  • Other Pyre Guard: Hestion, Gargo, Igataron, and several named heroes who fought at Vulkan’s side.

  • Firedrakes: Senior captains and Terminator elites who formed the unbreakable core of the Legion.

  • Cassian Dracos: Notable captain later interred in a Dreadnought, becoming a legendary “Dragon of Nocturne.”

  • Other figures: Umojen, various company captains, and heroic survivors who reached Terra for the final defence.

The Salamanders are the most “human” of the Legions — noble fire-bearers who value craftsmanship, brotherhood, and the protection of innocents even in the galaxy’s darkest hour.
