Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005–014.M31)
Heraldry & Iconography
The Space Wolves are the most feral and barbaric-looking of all the Legions. Their armour is primarily storm grey (symbolising the ice and thunder of Fenris), with accents of bright blue, red, yellow, and white. They incorporate heavy tribal, runic, and Norse-inspired motifs.
Legion Symbol: A snarling wolf’s head, often with a single eye or crossed axes.
Company Markings: Great Companies are identified by unique wolf icons and rune markings rather than simple numbers (e.g., the Blackmanes, Deathwolves, Firehowlers).
Squad Markings: Extensive use of Fenrisian runes, wolf skulls, teeth, claws, and kill-markings on pauldrons and knees.
Helmet Colours:
Tactical: Grey with blue or red accents
Assault / Blood Claws: Red or yellow
Devastator: White or black
Veterans & Command: Heavy gold, bone, or red trim with wolf pelts.
Additional Elements: Massive use of wolf pelts, fangs, bones, and trophies. Many warriors wear fur cloaks, rune-etched armour plates, and shamanistic talismans. Long hair and braided beards are common.
Armour Rank Distinctions
Blood Claws (Young Warriors): Minimal armour markings, red or yellow helmets.
Grey Hunters (Battle-Brothers): Standard grey armour with increasing rune markings.
Wolf Guard (Veterans): Heavy gold or bone trim, extensive trophies and pelts.
Wolf Lords / Jarls: Highly ornate armour covered in wolf skulls, runic engravings, and personal totems.
Terminators (Wolf Guard Terminators): Massive grey or black armour reinforced with bone and gold.
Priests (Rune Priests, Wolf Priests): Distinctive blue or black armour with heavy shamanistic runes and talismans.

Summary of History (Horus Heresy – 005–014.M31)
The VI Legion, the Space Wolves, were created as the Emperor’s executioners. They were deliberately engineered to be more savage and independent than other Legions. Upon reuniting with their Primarch Leman Russ on the death world of Fenris, they fully embraced their Viking/wolf culture and became known as the Emperor’s “watchdogs.”
During the Great Crusade they were frequently deployed as a blunt instrument — sent to bring particularly rebellious worlds or Legions to heel. They earned a fearsome reputation for total extermination when ordered.
Key events during the Horus Heresy (005–014.M31):
The Space Wolves were sent by the Emperor to censure Magnus the Red and the Thousand Sons at Prospero. They devastated the planet and nearly destroyed the Legion.
This action isolated them from Terra during the early stages of the Heresy.
Russ and the Wolves fought a brutal running war against Horus’s forces, attempting to reach Terra.
They played a major role in the Defence of the Imperial Palace during the Siege of Terra. Leman Russ famously dueelled Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit and was badly wounded.
The Legion suffered horrific losses but remained fiercely loyal to the Emperor until the end. Their hatred for the Thousand Sons and other Traitors burned hotter than any other Loyalist Legion.
The Space Wolves are defined by savagery, loyalty, and the joy of the hunt. They are the Emperor’s executioners who revel in righteous wrath.
