White Scars (V Legion)

White Scars (V Legion) – Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005-014.M31)

Heraldry and Colour Scheme

Primary colours: Chalk white power armour with bold red accents, trim, and markings. Extensive use of tribal patterns, lightning bolts, and Chogorian/Mongol-inspired iconography (e.g., horse tails, arrows, eagles).

Legion symbol: A stylised white scar (often a lightning bolt or jagged blade) or a rearing horse combined with lightning. Many warriors painted personal totems, tribal runes, and kill-markings in red or black.

Common decorations: Armour was often heavily customised with fur cloaks, horse-hair plumes, trophy braids, bone/ivory charms, and weathered battle damage. Vehicles featured lightning stripes, red-and-white chevrons, and tribal banners. The aesthetic blended high-tech with nomadic warrior culture – fast, fierce, and untamed.

Armour Rank Distinctions

The White Scars maintained a fluid, merit-based hierarchy rooted in Chogorian tribal traditions. Warriors earned status through deeds, skill, and loyalty rather than rigid protocol. They used a mix of Terran ranks and native titles.

  • Standard ranks: Warrior (Battle-Brother) → Huntmaster / Sergeant → Khan (Captain) → Lord Khan / Great Khan equivalents.

  • Veterancy markers: More elaborate lightning patterns, golden or red honour markings, additional tribal totems, and master-crafted weapons. Veterans often wore more fur, braids, or ornate helmets.

  • Keshig: The Primarch’s elite honour guard (often on jetbikes or in Terminator armour). Clad in ornate white/red plate with heavy lightning and draconic motifs; served as personal warriors and enforcers.

  • Golden Brotherhood / Storm Seers: Librarian equivalents (Stormseers) wore distinctive robes and lightning motifs over armour. They held high spiritual and advisory status.

  • Other distinctions: Company/s brotherhood markings (e.g., specific lightning patterns or horse symbols), helmet crests or plumes for leaders, and extensive personal heraldry. Many warriors bore ritual scars or painted names in Chogorian script.

Promotion came through combat prowess, leadership in raids, and adherence to the honour codes of the Steppe.

Summary of History (Heresy-Era Focus)

The V Legion was recruited from Terra’s Asiatic hives but was heavily reshaped after the discovery of their Primarch on Chogoris (also called Mundus Planus), a feudal world of nomadic horse-warrior tribes. Jaghatai Khan united the planet under his rule through speed and conquest, then brought this lightning-fast warfare doctrine to the Legion.

Pre-Heresy, the White Scars were specialists in rapid assault and pacification campaigns across vast fronts. They were often deployed on the galaxy’s fringes, earning a reputation for independence and ferocity. They maintained close but sometimes strained ties with other Legions due to their aloof, tribal nature.

During the Horus Heresy: The White Scars were far from Terra when the rebellion erupted. Communication delays and internal division (some warriors tempted by Horus’ promises) kept them from immediate involvement. Jaghatai Khan eventually declared for the Emperor after intense deliberation and brutal purges of traitor elements within the Legion.

They conducted a harrowing journey back toward Terra, fighting through traitor blockades and launching devastating hit-and-run campaigns (notably the Chondax Campaign against the Alpha Legion). The Legion arrived late to the main theatre but played a crucial role in the later stages of the Heresy, including scouting, flanking, and lightning raids during the lead-up to and during the Siege of Terra. They remained staunchly loyal, embodying freedom and unyielding speed against the forces of Chaos.

Weapons and Tactics

Tactics: Unrivalled masters of lightning warfare, hit-and-run raids, and highly mobile combat. They struck like a storm – fast attacks, feigned retreats, encirclements, and rapid disengagement. Heavy emphasis on outrider reconnaissance, encirclement, and psychological pressure through relentless harassment. Preferred open battlefields, pursuit actions, and avoiding static warfare. “Strike like lightning, vanish like thunder.”

Common weapons/equipment:

  • Signature weapons: Tulwar power swords, guan dao-style polearms, heavy use of bolters on bikes, plasma, and melta. Extensive lightning claws and chain weapons.

  • Specialist: Jetbikes, attack bikes, and Land Speeders formed the core of their forces. Stormseers wielded powerful lightning-based psychic abilities.

  • Elite gear: Keshig in ornate armour or on custom jetbikes; advanced scout and reconnaissance wargear.

  • Vehicles: Massive emphasis on jetbikes, bikes, Land Speeders, Rhinos, and Storm Eagles. Fewer heavy tanks than other Legions; they favoured speed and manoeuvrability (Sicaran, Sabre, and Proteus variants in supporting roles).

  • Khan’s wargear: White Tiger’s Claw (power sword or similar), master-crafted armour, and various Chogorian artefacts.

They excelled at disrupting supply lines, destroying isolated forces, and dictating the tempo of battle.

Notable Members (Heresy Era)

  • Jaghatai Khan (the Warhawk / Great Khan): Primarch. Charismatic, freedom-loving conqueror and master of lightning warfare. Fiercely independent yet loyal to the Emperor.

  • Torghun Khan: Senior Khan who led elements sympathetic to Horus; ultimately faced internal conflict and consequences.

  • Hasik Noyan Khan: Loyal commander and key raid leader.

  • Qin Xa: Master of the Hunt and close advisor to the Khan; highly skilled warrior.

  • Other notable Khans: Jubal Khan, Kublai Khan (various brotherhoods), and many brotherhood captains who led autonomous strike forces.

  • Stormseers: Senior psykers like Yesugei (early Heresy) who advised on spiritual and tactical matters.

  • Keshig warriors: Elite bodyguards who fought at the Khan’s side in the most critical actions.

The White Scars brought the fury of the steppe to the stars — fast, honourable, and utterly relentless. They valued freedom above all and proved that loyalty could coexist with independence even in the galaxy’s darkest age.

For the Khan and the Emperor!
