Word Bearers (XVII Legion) – Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005-014.M31)
Primary colours: Deep crimson/red or burgundy power armour with grey, silver, or bone trim. As the Heresy progressed, many incorporated black, brass, and gold accents, along with daemonic runes, scripture, and Chaos iconography (eight-pointed stars, skulls, flames).
Legion symbol: An open book (representing the Book of Lorgar) often wreathed in flames or with a stylised eye/daemon motif. Many warriors also used the "Unaligned" or holy scripture icons.
Common decorations: Extremely ornate and religious. Armour was covered in litanies, prayers, runes, purity seals (later corrupted), scrolls, devotional chains, and daemonic sigils. Helmets frequently featured horned or crested designs. Vehicles and Dreadnoughts were adorned like mobile cathedrals with banners, skulls, and scripture. The aesthetic shifted from pious Imperial zeal to overt Chaos worship — dark, fanatical, and ritualistic.
The Word Bearers had a highly stratified, theocratic hierarchy blending military rank with religious devotion. Status was tied to faith, sorcery, and favour with the Dark Gods (especially after turning traitor).
Standard ranks: Legionary (Acolyte/Battle-Brother) → Sergeant (Icon Bearer) → Captain (Dark Apostle equivalents) → Chapter Master / Coryphaus.
Dark Apostles: Senior captains and spiritual leaders. They carried crozius arcanum and spread the Word. Highly ornate armour with massive daemon icons and pulpits.
Coryphaus: Senior battlefield commanders who worked alongside Dark Apostles.
Gal Vorbak: Daemon-possessed elites (first created on Calth). Mutated warriors with daemonic features, red/black armour, and immense power.
Anointed / Terminator elites: Veteran 1st Company in ornate Tactical Dreadnought armour, often possessed or heavily mutated.
Other distinctions: Chaplains (pre-Heresy) evolved into Dark Apostles. Company markings included specific runes or holy numbers. Officers wore more elaborate robes, chains, and scripture over armour. Psykers (Warp-smiths, Diabolists) had distinct arcane markings.
Loyalty was enforced through faith, fear of damnation, and ritual punishment.
The XVII Legion was one of the earliest founded, recruiting from the theocratic world of Colchis. They were always the most zealous and spiritual Legion, viewing the Emperor as a literal god.
Primarch Lorgar Aurelian (the Urizen) was raised on Colchis as a religious leader. He unified the planet under the Imperial Truth but secretly never fully abandoned faith. When the Emperor rebuked him for building cathedrals and delaying compliances (notably on Monarchia, where the Ultramarines razed his works), Lorgar turned to Chaos. Guided by his First Captain Kor Phaeron and Erebus, the Legion became the first to fully embrace the Chaos Gods, forging the pact that enabled the Heresy.
During the Horus Heresy: The Word Bearers orchestrated the rebellion from the shadows. They purged loyalists on Istvaan III, fought at Istvaan V, and launched the devastating Calth campaign to cripple the Ultramarines (a brutal betrayal marked by daemonic incursions and the rise of the Gal Vorbak). They spread Chaos worship across the galaxy, performed vast rituals, and summoned daemons. During the Siege of Terra, they assaulted the Imperial Palace with fanatical zeal, focusing on ritualistic and sorcerous warfare to weaken the Emperor’s defences.
They remained one of the most unified and ideologically driven Traitor Legions, becoming the architects and chaplains of the entire Heresy.
Tactics: Masters of zealous assault, ritual warfare, and daemonic invocation. They combined fanatical close assaults with heavy sorcery, summoning, and psychological terror through sermons and atrocities. Preferred overwhelming numbers, siege warfare, boarding actions, and ritual sites that amplified warp powers. They turned battles into holy crusades, using corruption and possession as weapons. “The Word is strong; flesh is weak.”
Common weapons/equipment:
Signature weapons: Crozius arcanum (for Dark Apostles), power mauls, boltguns, flamers, and daemonic weapons. Heavy use of daemon engines and possessed gear.
Specialist: Warp-craft, summoning rituals, possessed marines, and biological/ritual corruption.
Elite gear: Gal Vorbak in mutated power armour with daemonic claws and resilience. Anointed Terminators with heavy daemon enhancements.
Vehicles: Rhinos, Land Raiders, Spartans, and immense daemon engines (foreshadowing later Forge World creations). Many vehicles were ritually blessed or possessed.
Lorgar’s wargear: Illuminarum (crozius), master-crafted armour, and powerful sorcerous artefacts.
They excelled at breaking both bodies and souls.
Lorgar Aurelian (the Urizen): Primarch. Visionary preacher and architect of the Heresy. Master orator and powerful psyker who ascended toward daemonhood.
Kor Phaeron: First Captain / First Chaplain. Lorgar’s adoptive father and ruthless political operator; heavily augmented.
Erebus: Chief Dark Apostle / Chaplain. Master manipulator, orchestrator of the Heresy, and one of the most influential figures in the entire conflict.
Sor Talgron: Captain known for brutal efficiency and later daemonhood.
Argel Tal: 7th Assault Captain. Leader of the Gal Vorbak; one of the first possessed and a tragic, honourable warrior.
Other notables: Zardu Layak (Dark Apostle), Ingethel the Ascended (daemon guide), various Dark Apostles and Coryphaus.
The Word Bearers began as the most faithful servants of the Emperor and became the most devoted servants of the Dark Gods — the spiritual heart of the Traitor cause.
