Horus Heresy Era (ca. 005–014.M31)
Heraldry & Iconography
The World Eaters are the most brutal and savage of all Legions. Originally the War Hounds, their armour is primarily off-white / bone white with deep blue accents. After falling to Khorne, they increasingly incorporated blood red, brass, and skull motifs, becoming ever more ragged and blood-soaked.
Legion Symbol: A snarling hound or wolf’s head (War Hounds era) that evolved into a stylized fanged maw or the eight-pointed star of Chaos.
Company Markings: Organized into “Warrior Bands” rather than traditional companies. Markings are crude, often painted in blood or brass.
Squad Markings: Chains, blood drops, butcher’s hooks, axe runes, and skull icons. Many warriors carve kill tallies directly into their armour.
Helmet Colours:
Tactical: White with blue accents
Assault / Rampagers: Red or brass helmets
Veterans & Command: Heavy brass, red, or black with skull helms.
Additional Elements: Massive use of chain weapons, exposed flesh, butcher’s nails cables, brass trim, blood splatter, and Khorne symbols as the Heresy progressed. Many remove helmets entirely to roar in battle.
Armour Rank Distinctions
Battle-Brothers (War Hounds): Standard white and blue power armour.
Rampagers / Assault Marines: Red and brass accents with heavy chain weaponry.
Veterans (Berserkers): Increasingly ragged armour covered in blood, brass, and trophies.
Captains / Centurions: Ornate brass and red armour with skull helms and massive chain axes.
World Eaters Command: Extremely modified armour with exposed augmetics, Khorne icons, and Butcher’s Nails implants visibly protruding.
Terminators (Caedere): Massive, brutal red and brass armour with chainfists and heavy plating.
Apothecaries (often distrusted): White and red with blood vial iconography, many eventually falling to the Nails as well.

Summary of History (Horus Heresy – 005–014.M31)
The XII Legion began as the War Hounds, a savage but loyal force used for the most brutal compliance actions. Upon reuniting with Primarch Angron on Nuceria, the Legion was renamed the World Eaters. Angron implanted the Butcher’s Nails — a crude neural device that turned them into frenzied berserkers — into the majority of the Legion.
During the Great Crusade they became infamous for their terrifying close-quarters savagery and willingness to suffer horrific casualties to achieve victory.
Key events during the Horus Heresy (005–014.M31):
The World Eaters were among the first Legions to fully turn traitor, joining Horus early.
They participated in the Isstvan III and Isstvan V massacres, where their brutality was legendary.
The Legion became increasingly consumed by the Butcher’s Nails and Khorne’s influence, fracturing into autonomous warbands driven purely by bloodlust.
They fought in numerous brutal campaigns, notably the Shadow Crusade alongside the Word Bearers.
During the Siege of Terra, the World Eaters launched some of the most savage assaults on the Imperial Palace, caring little for strategy and everything for slaughter.
Angron was elevated to Daemon Prince during the Heresy, further driving the Legion into mindless Khorne worship.
The World Eaters represent uncontrolled rage, betrayal of duty, and the complete surrender to bloodlust. They are the tragic fall of noble (if brutal) warriors into mindless berserkers.
Weapons & Tactics
The World Eaters specialize in pure close-quarters carnage and overwhelming frontal assault. They care little for strategy or survival — only for slaughter.
Core Tactical Doctrines:
Relentless, frenzied charges across any terrain.
Boarding actions and brutal melee in confined spaces.
“The Butcher’s Nails” driving them into uncontrollable rage.
Minimal use of ranged combat — they prefer to close and rip enemies apart.
Signature Weapons & Formations:
Chainaxes, Chainblades, and massive Power Axes.
Butcher’s Nails enhanced warriors (Rampagers).
Caedere Terminators with chainfists.
Heavy use of Jump Packs for rapid, screaming charges.
World Eaters Dreadnoughts (often completely insane).
Later in the Heresy: Khorne Berzerkers and daemon-possessed warriors.
