(Scientific Name: Poa cobaltus | Common Nicknames: The Horizon Drowner, Sky Mirror | Charles’s Ledger: Variable-F08)
Botanical Profile: The Horizon Drowner
Habitat: Dominates the flat clearings of the Wichita ruins and the vast, open Kansas plains. It thrives in high-exposure areas.
The Sky Mirror: Each blade is coated in a liquid-crystalline wax. This isn't just pigmentation; the grass is a high-fidelity reflective surface that mirrors the current state of the sky (Brilliant Azure at noon, Swirling Charcoal during storms, Deep Violet at Mauve Hour).
The Static Hum: Friction between the blades builds a constant charge of static electricity. Travelers experience a crackling halo effect and the sensation of hair standing on end when entering the "sea."
Charles’s Note: "The Cobalt Mirage is math written in light. Step wrong and the horizon folds under your feet. Don’t look down too long, or the sky decides whether you stay."
Physical Characteristics: The Conductive Blade
Horizon Sickness: The perfect reflection of the sky onto the ground induces a sensory paradox. Depth perception fails, leading to "The Vanishing"—a state of intense vertigo, nausea, and disorientation.
Static Flare: In dry conditions, the static charge can discharge in bright sparks. This is a significant hazard near Pulse Maple gas pockets, where a single spark can trigger a localized fuel-air explosion.
Reflective Wax: The wax is fragile but highly adhesive, sticking to boots and gear and making them reflective as well.
Performance Specs: Material Science
Mirage Cloaks: Woven blades create a surface that mirrors the ground/sky, rendering the wearer nearly invisible in open terrain. Harvesting requires Weaver’s Tree gloves to insulate against the "Static Burn."
Static Strings: The conductive seed-stalks are used for premium bowstrings. They are nearly invisible and deliver a microscopic electrical sting that momentarily scrambles the target’s nervous system.
Signal Shards: The flat, reflective blades are used as long-distance silent signaling devices, capable of bouncing sunlight across miles of prairie.
Charles’s Audit: The Visual Constant
"When the ground moves faster than the wind, you're looking at a Mirage. When the ground looks like the sky, you’re walking on one. Only fools or those with Sly-Kin training wander its seas without timing and focus. Two, three, five, seven... keep your eyes on the math of the distant treeline, not the grass." — Charles, The Analyst
Horizon Sickness: Creatures moving through the grass must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom (Perception) check or have Disadvantage on attack rolls and Dexterity saves due to loss of depth perception.
Static Discharge: Whenever a creature takes the Dash action through the grass or engages in melee combat, they must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity save or take 1d4 lightning damage from a static spark.
Mirage Camouflage: While prone or moving slowly (half speed) in the grass, a creature wearing a Mirage Cloak has Advantage on Stealth checks.
Conductive Sting: Bows using Static Strings deal an additional 1 lightning damage. On a critical hit, the target must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution save or be unable to take Reactions until the start of its next turn.
