Deep Space Survival & Protective Gear

In the Vyrn-Kalath system, the physiology of the drow has adapted to the harsh realities of a fractured star system, allowing them to exist in conditions that would be fatal to other species. While they often utilize armor and specialized gear, these are primarily utilized for faction identification, combat, and protection against reality-altering corruption rather than basic biological survival.

Deep Space Survival

Drow physiology allows for survival in deep space without the need for traditional atmospheric suits or oxygen.

  • Vacuum Immunity: Drow can survive the vacuum of space for extended periods without protective gear.

  • Atmospheric Independence: They are capable of walking on desolate rocks and "specks of dust" like Aethelgard's Anvil, where the air is thin or virtually non-existent.

  • Poison Resistance: Their systems are robust enough to breathe air that is considered mostly poison to other life forms.

The Role of Protective Gear

Since biological survival is naturally accounted for, drow "space suits" are repurposed as shields against the system's pervasive cognitive and physical hazards.

  • Corruption Shielding: Armor is used to maintain a perimeter against the "Hollowing" and the physical tendrils of whisper-metal.

  • Cognitive Dampening: Helmets are often lead-lined specifically to prevent whisper-metal from reading the wearer's mind or transmitting "The Song".

  • Mutation Containment: For the Order of the Silent Requiem, bloated and modified armor is used to physically contain the cancerous growths and mutations they absorb from the environment.

  • Prophetic Sight: The Order of the Eternal Vigil utilizes crystalline armor with floating drones to enhance their study of whisper-metal rather than for life support.

Biological Indicators of Self

Because they do not require suits for oxygen, the visible physical state of a drow is a critical social indicator of their sanity.

  • The Stitch Check: Because skin is exposed or visible through translucent armor, drow constantly check one another for "stitches"β€”seams that indicate the body is being reorganized into "infrastructure".

  • The Warmth of Breath: Although they do not require oxygen for survival, the act of "breathing" and the "warmth" of biological life are used as psychological anchors to distinguish the "real" drow from the "Hollow" who have become cold architecture.
