Documented Hazards: The Erosion of Self

In the Vyrn-Kalath system, survival is not merely a matter of physical fortitude but of psychological shielding. The following hazards represent the progressive stages of Conversion, a state in which the individual is systematically unmade and "included" into the greater whole.

Hazard 1: Cognitive Bleed

The Erosion of Identity Cognitive bleed is the process by which a drow’s internal sense of self is systematically overwritten by the "quantum-resonant memory" of the metal they carry.

  • The Cause: Prolonged physical contact with refined Runite, especially "trained" gear that has previously been bonded to other soldiers or knights.

  • The Effect: Users suffer from intense dΓ©jΓ  vu and begin receiving thoughts, emotions, and sensory data from previous owners.

  • The Progression: In severe cases, the victim loses the ability to distinguish their own memories from the embedded data, leading to periods of "missing time" where they behave as a completely different person.

  • The Prevention: Standard military protocol requires limiting exposure and using the "buddy system" to verify that comrades still remember their own names and histories.

Hazard 2: Psionic Feedback

The Refracted Soul Because Runite acts as a "lens for thought," it does not merely transmit psionic energyβ€”it amplifies it and occasionally answers back.

  • The Cause: Focusing intense emotion or specific intent through whisper-metal components.

  • The Effect: The metal responds to the user's internal state; for instance, a blade held by a grieving warrior may "weep" iridescent, hardening tears.

  • The Danger: The material may provide "unauthorized" mental contact, feeding the user images, emotions, or direct instructions that originate from the metal's own "opinions".

  • The Order’s Burden: This is most prevalent in the Order of the Adamant Crown, whose crowns tighten and crack the wearer's skull as a form of "correction" when their thoughts stray from the Covenant.

Hazard 3: The Song (The Chorus)

The Final Invitation The most lethal hazard is the auditory phenomenon known as the "Singing" or the "Unseen Chorus," which acts as the primary recruitment tool for The Thing.

  • The Stages: It begins as a faint hum felt in the teeth, eventually manifesting as a thousand voices screaming in perfect, haunting harmony.

  • The Psychological Hook: Affected individuals describe the music as "beautiful" and "warm," while their current reality begins to feel "cold" and "empty".

  • Conversion: Once the Song becomes persistent (lasting more than six hours), the victim undergoes "conversion," voluntarily walking into a whisper-metal vein or the central cyclone to be "included".

  • The Horror: Victims do not die; they become "music," with their faces often seen later pressed against the inside of the cyclone, still conscious and still singing.

The Path of Conversion

  • Resonance: The character begins to stare at whisper-metal veins for hours, weeping without knowing why.

  • Colonization: Physical "stitches" and purple-green tendrils emerge from the skin; the body begins "laying pipe" for what comes next.

  • Integration: Eyes shift to a glowing pinkish-white; the character looks upward at the sky/cyclone constantly.

  • Recognition: The character stops fighting and "smiles" with a mouth that is no longer their own, recognizing The Thing as "home".

  • Furniture: The soul is emptied, and the body returns from the cyclone as "infrastructure" for the entity.
