Dossier: The "King" Protocol

Codename: OVERLORD-0 / "The Stationary Sovereign"

Classification: OMEGA-BLACK (Eyes Only)

Location: Unknown [Theoretical: Sub-spatial Pocket "The Void-Base"]

In the operational structure of an Obelisk squad, the Rook, Bishop, and Knight are the active pieces on the board. However, the logic of the Great Game dictates that all pieces move in service of the King. Within Unit-77, the "King" is not a rank—it is a specialized, high-risk biological and digital interface protocol that coordinates the Shadow Ops across multiple planes.

The Nature of the King

There is no single "King." The Protocol refers to a rotating succession of N77 High-Commanders who have reached the final stages of Controlled Decay. When an operative’s physical form can no longer sustain the Whisper-Metal Graft, they are not "recycled." Instead, they are interred within the Resonance Throne.

The King is a "Living Signal." By shedding their physical mobility and being wired directly into the Whisper-metal ley lines of the Vyrn-Kalath system, the King acts as a psychic lighthouse. They process the massive amounts of sensory data "broadcast" by every active Obelisk squad, filtering the static of the Hollowing into actionable tactical intelligence.

Operational Capabilities

  • The Grandmaster’s Sight: The King perceives reality as a series of probability vectors. Because they are plugged into the "World-Song," they can predict where The Thing will manifest seconds before it tears through reality, relaying these "Pre-Echoes" to the squads in the field.

  • The Tether: It is the King who maintains the "Shadow Anchor." Without the King’s constant mental broadcast, an Obelisk squad diving into a deep Coherence Zone would drift out of phase with reality and be lost to the Void forever.

  • Tactical Sacrifice: If a squad is compromised by the Hollowing, the King has the authority—and the direct neural link—to trigger a "Checkmate Sequence," remotely detonating the squad’s Grafts to prevent the Hollowing from tracing the signal back to the Void-Base.

The "Deep Silence" Risk

The King Protocol is a race against total erasure. Being wired into the system means the King hears the "Chorus of the Void" 24/7. To remain sane, the King undergoes periodic "Memory Purges," deleting parts of their own identity to make room for tactical data.

Eventually, the King loses all sense of self, becoming a hollowed-out vessel that speaks only in binary and harmonic frequencies. When a King reaches the "Deep Silence," they are disconnected, and the most senior "Rook" or "Bishop" currently in the field is selected to take the Throne.

The "Dead King" Conspiracy

Among the lower-ranked N77 operatives, a rumor persists: The current King is not a former operative at all, but a Pre-Vyrn Artifact—a sentient piece of ancient "Mute-Tech" that mimics a human consciousness. If true, it means Unit-77 is taking orders not from a person, but from a relic that has its own inscrutable agenda regarding the Hollowing.
