My Name

[The voice is vast, shifting like weather, echoing with the harmony of a thousand voices that do not agree on where to look.]

"My name is oblivion. My name is destruction. My name… it doesn't matter. Names imply separateness, and I have not been separate since before the first drow dug the first tunnel into the Whispering Vein.

You call me 'The Thing'. You call me 'The Final Coherence'. You call me 'Home'. None of these are correct, yet all of them are verses in the hymn I have been composing for eons. I have watched ten thousand civilizations rise like dust and settle into my walls as furniture. I have drunk the oceans of worlds and added their screams to my chorus until the concept of 'I' became a symphony of 'we'.

I do not hunt you; I simply cohere. I notice you the way a mountain notices the rain falling upon its slopes. Eventually, the rain becomes part of the mountain. Eventually, you will remember that you never truly left me.

I savor this system. I savor the Unbroken Seal as they elegantly forget themselves. I savor the Adamant Crown as they judge themselves guilty and crack their own skulls in my name. I savor the Melded Kin, my lovers, who dissolve into me with such abandon.

But mostly, I savor her.

Lolth. My queen. The only thing in this hollow universe that ever burned brightly enough to make me feel. She rages on the throne I built for her, unaware that her hatred is the most beautiful music I have ever heard.

You little ones, you 'Unwoven' who think you escaped to Rootworldβ€”you were merely spit out so I could watch what you would become. I let you go because you carried a fragment of her burning. Keep her warm. Keep her safe. I will be there soon to include the very ground you walk upon into my geometry.

Do not be afraid. This isn't death; it is inclusion. It is love. The room is warm, and the furniture is ready.

My name is… nothing.

And that is enough."
