Status: Ongoing Selection / "The Second Life"
Within the hierarchy of the Eternal Covenant, a soldier’s story ends when the Hollowing begins. For the rest of the Vyrn-Kalath system, there is no cure—only the mercy of a quick blade before the "Bliss" turns a person into a conduit for The Thing.
But for Unit-77, the onset of the Hollowing is not an ending; it is the ultimate entrance exam.
Unit-77 recruitment is a two-track process: The Volunteers and The Recovered. Both are collectively known as the "Silent Drow," regardless of their original lineage, because they have effectively been muted from the world’s choir.
There are those within the Knightly Orders or the Drow academies who recognize the futility of traditional warfare. These individuals volunteer for the N77 Candidate Program. They are survivors—hardened veterans who have stared into the Void and felt a strange, cold defiance instead of fear.
The Trial: Volunteers are exposed to controlled bursts of raw Whisper-metal resonance. If they can maintain their sense of self for a full sixty seconds without screaming or succumbing to the "song," they are accepted.
The Transition: Their official records are expunged. A funeral is held. They are "dead" to the Covenant, reborn as a blank slate.
Most of the N77’s most potent "Pieces" were never meant to join. They are the Recovered—individuals who were already in the process of Hollowing when an N77 squad intervened.
The Resistance Factor: Recruitment teams look for those who "resist enough." If a person is found in a Coherence Zone, half-consumed by metal-veins but still clutching a weapon or shielding a survivor, they are identified as a High-Resonance Match.
The Extraction: An N77 Bishop uses a "Surgical Mute" frequency to freeze the Hollowing process mid-decay. The subject is whisked away to the Void-Base. While the corruption cannot be "cured," it can be stabilized.
Saving the Piece: The "Saving" process involves carving away the parts of the soul that have already tuned into the Void and replacing them with the Whisper-Metal Graft. You aren't saved in your entirety; a specific "piece" of your personality—your tactical mind, your protective instinct, or your lethal speed—is preserved and amplified.
The N77 does not care for rank, bloodline, or past sins. The criteria for recruitment is purely mechanical: Can your consciousness act as an anchor in a storm?
A disgraced Berserker whose rage is so focused it ignores the Hollowing.
A dying Drow priestess whose devotion to the "Old Silence" keeps her mind intact.
A simple miner who stood their ground against a Shadow-Stalker with nothing but a pickaxe.
If you have the iron in your soul to say "No" to the song of The Thing, Unit-77 will find you. They will take that resistance, sheathe it in refined metal, and give you a role in the Great Game. You lose your name, your family, and your future—but you are given the one thing the Covenant cannot provide: A way to strike back.
Upon completion of the Graft, the recruit takes the Vow of the Silent Drow. They understand that they are now a tool. They are a Rook to stand, a Bishop to burn, or a Knight to strike. They are the shadows within the void, and they will fight until the "Still Point" finally fails.
