The Stitches & Taboos

In the crumbling social order of Vyrn-Kalath, physical appearance and consumption have become battlegrounds for the soul. The appearance of "Stitches" marks the beginning of the end, while "Taboos" form the daily armor of the still-separate.

The Stitches: Infrastructure of the Body

The "Stitches" are not wounds, but a sign of Stage 2: Colonization. They represent the body mechanically preparing itself for "further installation" by the whisper-metal.

  • Appearance: They manifest as clean, deliberate seams appearing across the forehead, arms, neck, or torso.

  • Purpose: These are "access points" where the whisper-metal begins "laying pipe" for internal reorganization.

  • The Sensation: Unlike traditional scars, the stitches are painless; victims often do not notice them until a neighbor points them out or the "pink-white" glow begins in the eyes.

  • Social Impact: In Sil-Varyn, neighbors would notice these "neat, deliberate seams" on those who had been acting strange or staring at the sky. To see stitches on a loved one is to realize they are already being "furnished" by the Thing.

🚫 Social and Dietary Taboos

To survive in the system, the drow have developed a rigorous list of prohibited behaviors and substances designed to make the body "unappealing" to the Chorus.

Food and Drink Taboos

Diet is the first line of defense, focusing on the "Hunger as Identity" principle.

  • Avoid Sweets: The metal is drawn to pleasure and "fermentation" (change); therefore, sweet foods are strictly avoided in favor of bitter ones.

  • Raw Garlic and Salt: Drow who resist the metal consume raw garlic daily and add salt to everything, as the metal "cannot hold salted things".

  • Living Water only: Drinking from stagnant sources is taboo, as still water is believed to "carry whispers".

  • Stranger's Cooking: One never eats food prepared by a stranger, as the metal is known to "poison through kindness".

Behavioral Taboos

Manners are weaponized to maintain a "boring" mental profile.

  • The Taboo of Solitude: Being alone is considered dangerous; the metal "prefers solitude for conversion" and fears witnesses.

  • Forbidden Melodies: Humming or singing any tune that mimics the "harmonic roar" of the metal is a social death sentence.

  • Moonlight Aversion: Walking in moonlight is avoided, as the metal "sees clearly in silver light".

  • The Taboo of Stability: Sleeping in the same place every night is a risk; the metal "learns locations," so the separate must remain transient.

Material Taboos

  • Lead and Copper: While whisper-metal (Runite) is "sexy" and powerful, those resisting it wear copper or lead-lined gear. Lead specifically blocks the metal's ability to "read" the wearer.

  • Glass over Metal: Using glass blades is a sign of high status among the resistant, as the metal "cannot possess glass".
