Butcher Creek
History
Butcher Creek is a bleak, isolated, and highly insular hamlet in the Roanoke Ridge area of New Hanover. The town is a collection of dilapidated shacks and outhouses built on a muddy, swampy hillside, dominated by a pervasive sense of poverty and despair. The settlement is adorned with unsettling folk art, talismans, and animal skulls, while a polluted creek runs through it, shrouded in a perpetual fog that creates a grim, eerie atmosphere.
The residents, a highly superstitious and wary folk, are often referred to as "The Butcher Brothers." They live a simple, brutish life, marked by a deep-seated fear of the world outside their village. They believe their misfortunes—poor crops, sick animals, and constant ill-luck—are the result of a curse from a "pagan god" that inhabits the area. This belief has led to a dark, long-standing tradition of gruesome rituals and a pervasive distrust of outsiders, whom they often blame for their plight.
Butcher Creek is a dangerous place. The inhabitants are hostile and territorial, quick to resort to violence with melee weapons and firearms. Their paranoia and superstition make any interaction with them unpredictable and potentially deadly. Compounding the human threats are the natural dangers of the region. The woods of Roanoke Ridge are home to predators like cougars, black bears, and timber wolves, while the polluted creek and eerie surroundings present their own environmental hazards. Despite these dangers, the area supports a variety of native plants, including Indian Tobacco and Wild Mint, as well as wildlife like the Whitetail Deer and North American Beaver found along the nearby Roanoke River.
