Money and Trade

The three coins

There are three kinds of money. From highest to lowest they are Credits, Chits and Scrap.

  • Credit. A paper note from the Gate Compact with a stamp on it. The highest money.

  • Chit. A stronghold ration ticket. Used for meals, bunks and daily pay.

  • Scrap. A small stamped metal token. Used for small change.

1 Credit is worth 10 Chits. 1 Chit is worth 10 Scrap. So 1 Credit is worth 100 Scrap.

Barter on the road

Out on the road, far from strongholds, people barter. They trade food, bullets, medicine, tools and work instead of coins. Bullets are the most common barter goods, because everyone needs them.

Common prices

  • A meal costs 2 Chits.

  • A day of hard work pays 5 Chits.

  • A night in a stronghold bunk costs 3 Chits.

  • 1 pistol or rifle round costs 1 Chit. A reloaded round costs 5 Scrap.

  • 1 arrow costs 3 Scrap.

  • A bandage costs 2 Chits.

  • Antibiotics (1 course) cost 15 Credits.

  • A Booster Shot costs 100 Credits. It is rare and often not for sale.

  • A pistol costs 20 Credits.

  • A hunting rifle costs 35 Credits.

  • An assault rifle costs 150 Credits. It is very rare.

  • A machete costs 3 Credits.

  • A horse costs 60 Credits.

What sells best

  • Booster Shots. The most valuable thing a person can carry.

  • Medicine. Antibiotics, painkillers and bandages.

  • Bullets. Most rounds are hand-reloaded from old brass.

  • Food. Grain, meat, salt and honey.

  • Small comforts. Coffee, tobacco and home-made liquor.

Who trades what

  • Lifeline sells Booster Shots, antibiotics and medical care.

  • The Grange sells grain, corn and beef.

  • The Salt Fleet carries goods and passengers between continents.

  • The Pickers sell loot from the dead cities, and maps and entry rights to them.

  • The Tollmen sell safe passage on Interstate 80, when they keep their word.

  • The Marked smuggle Booster Shots, often for less than Lifeline asks.

Wages and work

Strongholds always need workers. Common jobs are wall guard, farm hand, burn crew, builder, hunter and scout. Dangerous work pays more. A salvage run into a dead city can pay more in one day than a month of farm work, if the team comes back.
