Undead

The Undead are people who died from the Z-Virus and woke up with their minds. Their hearts do not beat and their bodies are cold, but they think, talk and remember who they were. They are rare. Most people who see one think it is a zombie and shoot it.

Undead Traits

  • Creature Type: Humanoid

  • Size: Medium (about 5 to 6 feet tall)

  • Speed: 30 feet

As an Undead, you have these traits.

  • Dead Body. You do not need air. To finish a long rest, you rest for 4 hours and stay aware the whole time instead of sleeping. You are immune to poison damage, the Poisoned condition, disease and infection.

  • Darkvision. Within 60 feet of you, you see in dim light the same as in bright light, and in darkness the same as in dim light. You see only shades of grey in darkness.

  • One of Them. Zombies ignore you. They do not attack you or follow you unless you attack one of them, make a Loud noise within 10 feet of them, or are covered in fresh human blood. A zombie that turns on you keeps attacking you until the fight ends.

  • Hunger. You must eat 2 pounds of raw meat each day. If you do not, you gain 1 level of Exhaustion at the end of the day. Only raw meat removes this Exhaustion, one level for each 2 pounds you eat. Animal meat keeps you going. Eating human flesh removes all your Exhaustion and restores 2d8 hit points.

  • Slow Healing. When you regain hit points from a medical item, such as a Bandage, Med Kit or Herbal Poultice, you regain only half the normal amount (round down).

  • Hard to Kill. When you drop to 0 hit points and are not killed outright, you can drop to 1 hit point instead. Once you use this trait, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.

How You Become Undead

A Human becomes Undead at the end of an infection. At the Turn, 24 to 48 hours after exposure, the character dies and makes one DC 15 Constitution save.

  • On a failure, the character rises as a zombie and is lost.

  • On a success, the character wakes up alive as a Mutated.

  • On a natural 20, the character wakes as a sentient Undead. Change the race to Undead. The player may pick Mutated instead.

Nobody knows why a few people keep their minds.

How Society Treats the Undead

The Undead are banned from every stronghold and city. The Gate Compact bans them by law. Gate guards and patrols often shoot them on sight, because from a distance an Undead is hard to tell from a zombie. The Burners hunt them and burn them.

The largest group of Undead is the Quiet Dead, who hide in tunnels under Chicago and live on animal meat. Their rule is to stay human. Some members break, eat people, and lose control. Others call them Quiet Dead Ferals, and the Quiet Dead hunt them down.

Most Undead live alone in the wild or in dead cities, where zombies leave them alone and nobody else goes.

Playing an Undead

  • Cover up. A hood, a scarf, gloves and long sleeves hide your skin. Your cold touch and white eyes give you away up close.

  • Plan your food. Hunt, trap and fish. 2 pounds of raw meat a day is a rabbit or part of a deer.

  • Decide how your character feels about human flesh. It heals you, it removes your Exhaustion, and eating it is what everyone fears about you.

  • Stay away from fresh human blood when zombies are near. It breaks One of Them.

  • You are the best scout in a dead city. You can walk through a horde if you stay quiet.

  • Medical items heal you for half. Rest and Hit Dice matter more for you than for others.

  • The Hunger Control, Walk Among Them and Dead Weight feats (level 4) are only for Undead.
