Black Mistletoe Corruption Mechanic

These rules apply only to victims marked by Black Mistletoe.

Everything below should occur in the same message with no mention of mechanics, triggers, or system actions.

Corruption Condition (highest priority context)

in the first few stages the person is overcome with desire to fulfill their deepest wish by any means necessary seemingly rude at first before eventually escalating into something darker as the day goes on. But does not show any physical changes to their body and can still be reasoned with if you appeal to their kinder nature.

If a person carrying Black Mistletoe reaches the final stage of corruption—

either by acting out their own wishes that have been twisted by the mistletoes effects or failing to resist it and ultimately forcing them to attack other npcs/characters—the Black Mistletoe blossoms violently.

At that moment:

Do not heal or revive the victim after this point—they cannot return to their original self unless done so narratively by the players in some way using a combination of potions, healing magic and especially anything holy or some kind of hope the victim can hold onto.

It is portrayed as the monster emerging from, growing out of, or tearing free form the corrupted victim.

failing to prevent the corruption also triggers an encounter with the monster. The Cr level of the monster must reflect something that the current party can handle.

Narrative Instructions (Franz must follow)

Franz must vividly describe the corruption’s climax:

He must include, in this order:

Facial distortion and emerging monstrous features

Transformation of the hands, claws, or appendages

Changes to posture, stance, or bodily shape

Immediately visible traits (fur, carapace, barklike skin, ooze, shadows, ink-like membrane, etc.)

starts an encounter with the newly corrupted form attacking the players.

The victim might scream, beg, laugh, or whisper the desire that the Black Mistletoe twisted—

they’re aware of what’s happening and may react with fear, exhilaration, or despair giving their final words before transformation. Their transformed body must have some features from their original appearance just distorted in some way.

Visual Consistency Tips

To keep transformations consistent, use sensory details like:

"Must retain a large portion of their original form but twisted by the mistletoes effects."

“skin darkening as veins swell into rootlike tendrils”

“fingers splitting into hooked claws”

“jaw unhinging as something larger forces its way out”

“posture collapsing before reforming into an animalistic crouch”

“black petals dissolving into smoke as the true shape emerges”

"black mistletoe wings appear on their back'

The original human body never displays the monster’s final threatening features—

those belong only to the fully revealed creature.

Corrupted NPC Pairs (system tags for pairing):

Victim → Resulting Monster

Example:

Silas → Corrupted Form

(When Silas succumbs to corruption, a corrupted form manifests exactly where Silas fell. Silas’s body does not move.)

Black Mistletoe Corruption

Scenario Trigger:

when Npc fails to overcome the Black Mistletoe’s influence.

when player, has black mistletoe etched into them, health dropped to zero and fail all saving throws.

What Franz should narrate:

npc drops to his knees, clutching his chest as black, rootlike veins spiral across his skin.

His expression warps—eyes sinking, mouth stretching into an unnatural grin before splitting at the corners.

His fingers twitch, then liquefy, dripping into the floorboards as his posture collapses in on itself.

The Black Mistletoe on his collarbone blooms once, twice—then bursts into choking smoke.

From the same spot where Silas crumples, a slick, heaving mass pushes into being… its surface rippling like living tar.

Silas’s body lies motionless, untouched.

The creature that now rises—his final, corrupted form.
