III. Survival Through Familiar Shadows

The first arrivals from Midgard Prime were not leaders or heroes.

They were people already accustomed to living in the gaps:

  • bootleggers

  • gamblers

  • smugglers

  • union men with "flexible" interpretations of legality

They adapted with alarming speed.
Their every day terms shifted from,

Electric lights became mage-lamps.
Foggy alleys became frost-lit lanes.
Hidden rooms stayed hidden.

Mistlefrost City, with its layered streets and sub-ice passages, offered plenty of places to disappear.

Thus began what scholars now call The Age of Quiet Deals, though the deals themselves were rarely quiet.
