Varnathar

A desolate world of barren wastes and rock formations, where ruins tell of a lost civilization.

Author's Note: Varnathar is a world ravaged by millennia of neglect and destruction. Once a vibrant land teeming with life, it now lies in a state of perpetual desolation. The sky is often choked with swirling, ashen clouds, casting a dull, sickly light over the barren landscape. Jagged rock formations pierce the earth like the bones of a long-dead titan, and vast stretches of cracked earth are interspersed with deep canyons and dried riverbeds. The wind howls through the ruins of ancient cities, carrying with it the echoes of a forgotten civilization. Only the hardiest of creatures survive here, thriving in the shadows of the once-glorious peaks and crumbled monuments that dot the land. Few dare to venture into the wastes, for those who do are often lost to the endless, unforgiving expanse. The world’s fractured history is told through the scattered remnants of its past—ruined temples, crumbling libraries, and broken statues that hint at a time of power and prosperity, long since lost. There is a constant undercurrent of decay, with the very earth itself seeming to mourn the passing of its glory days. Only the desperate or the foolhardy seek refuge in Varnathar’s heart, believing that among the ruins lie the answers to a greater mystery, or perhaps the key to reversing the devastation that has marred the world for centuries.

Ashenhold Keep

Ashenhold Keep

Ashenhold Keep is an ancient fortress nestled within the heart of an extinct volcano in the Scorched Expanse. Once a symbol of power and resilience, the castle now lies in ruin, its walls cracked and its towers partially submerged in molten magma that has seeped into the lower levels. Blackened by centuries of soot and ash, the keep’s jagged silhouette looms ominously over the barren, scorched landscape. Inside, the heat is oppressive, and the air is thick with the smell of sulfur. Despite its desolation, Ashenhold Keep is rumored to hold treasures of an ancient warlord who once ruled from its fiery halls, as well as secrets tied to the volcanic forces that shaped the region. Few dare to approach, for the magma’s glow warns of the volatile forces that still linger beneath the surface.

Temple of forgotten stars

Temple of forgotten stars

The Temple of Forgotten Stars is an ancient ruin, its towering columns now half-collapsed and overgrown with moss and vines. It was once a place of worship dedicated to celestial beings, though the identity of these beings is lost to history. The temple sits atop a hill, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Within the temple are cryptic carvings and celestial charts that seem to indicate a time when the stars themselves held great significance. Some believe the temple holds the secrets to reversing the decay of the world, though no one has been able to uncover them.

The Cliffside Hearth

The Cliffside Hearth

Inn Name: The Cliffside Hearth Description: Carved into the cliffside, The Cliffside Hearth is a cozy inn offering refuge from the wind. The main room, lit by a roaring stone fireplace, is filled with mismatched wooden furniture and tapestries. Shelves hold trinkets from travelers—swords, shields, and curios—while the air is filled with the aroma of roasted meat and fresh bread. Small rooms overlook the cliffs, each simple but comfortable. Owner: Maeve Alfrun, a quiet and practical woman, has run the inn for generations. She knows every secret and story in the village, offering a warm meal and a listening ear to all who arrive. Specialty: The inn’s herb-infused stew, made with local vegetables and spices, and the Mead of the Hollow, a honeyed brew crafted from bees in the cliffs, are favorites among villagers and travelers alike.
