02. The Black Legion, Traitor Legions, and Renegade Astartes

The Fall of the Legions

During the Horus Heresy, many Space Marine Legions turned against the Emperor.

Their reasons varied:

  • Resentment toward Imperial authority

  • Manipulation by Chaos powers

  • Personal ambition

  • Political disagreements

  • Desire for independence

  • Belief that humanity needed a different future

The rebellion failed.

The traitor forces were driven into the Eye of Terror.

There, many continued their war against the Imperium.

Life as a Traitor Astartes

Chaos Space Marines exist in a constant struggle.

They must survive:

  • Rival warbands

  • Internal betrayal

  • Chaos corruption

  • Daemonic influence

  • Resource shortages

  • Imperial retaliation

They often operate through:

  • Raids

  • Conquests

  • Mercenary contracts

  • Long-term schemes

  • Revenge campaigns

Many have lived for thousands of years.

Their memories include wars that most civilizations have forgotten.

The Black Legion

The Black Legion is the largest and most influential Chaos Space Marine Legion.

It formed from survivors of the Sons of Horus after the Horus Heresy.

Under the leadership of Abaddon the Despoiler, it became a force capable of uniting many Chaos factions toward common goals.

The Black Legion is known for:

  • Strategic discipline

  • Powerful warbands

  • Large-scale invasions

  • Hatred of the Imperium

  • Ability to cooperate with other Chaos forces

Unlike many traitor groups, the Black Legion often focuses on victory over personal rivalries.

Abaddon the Despoiler

Abaddon is one of the greatest enemies of the Imperium.

He leads the Black Legion and commands the Black Crusades against humanity.

His goals include:

  • Destroying Imperial power

  • Continuing the war begun during the Horus Heresy

  • Breaking the Imperium’s defenses

  • Establishing Chaos dominance

Abaddon is not merely a warrior.

He is a commander, strategist, and political leader capable of uniting otherwise divided Chaos forces.

Renegade Astartes

Not all Chaos Space Marines come from the original Traitor Legions.

Some are former Imperial warriors who later rebel.

Reasons may include:

  • Betrayal by Imperial leadership

  • Political disputes

  • Failed campaigns

  • Desire for independence

  • Corruption

  • Revenge

  • Forbidden knowledge

These renegades may still retain aspects of their former identity.

Independent Warbands

Many Chaos Space Marines do not belong to a formal Legion.

A warband may include:

  • Former Legion warriors

  • Renegade Chapters

  • Cultists

  • Mutants

  • Daemons

  • Traitor Guard

  • Dark Mechanicum allies

Warbands are often built around:

  • A powerful leader

  • A shared goal

  • A history of victories

  • A unique philosophy

Some are disciplined armies.

Others are unstable groups held together by fear.

Chaos Astartes Motivations

A Chaos Space Marine may fight for:

Revenge

Against:

  • The Imperium

  • Former allies

  • Rival Legions

  • Betrayers

Power

Seeking:

  • Greater authority

  • Daemonic gifts

  • Ancient weapons

  • Leadership

Survival

Some simply wish to endure another century.

Belief

Some truly believe Chaos offers a better future.

Some seek eternal recognition through conquest.

Rivalries Among Chaos Astartes

Chaos forces are united by hatred of the Imperium but divided by their own ambitions.

Conflicts may involve:

  • Legion pride

  • Religious disagreements

  • Resource competition

  • Leadership struggles

  • Different Chaos patrons

  • Old grudges

Chaos victories are often threatened by internal conflict.

Chaos Astartes and Other Chaos Forces

Chaos Space Marines often cooperate with:

  • Cultists

  • Traitor Guard

  • Dark Mechanicum

  • Daemons

  • Chaos Knights

  • Rogue elements

However, many consider ordinary followers expendable.

A Chaos warband may inspire loyalty through:

  • Fear

  • Rewards

  • Shared victories

  • Promises of power

  • Common enemies

Using Chaos Astartes in Campaigns

Chaos Space Marines should feel rare and dangerous.

They are not ordinary enemies.

A single Chaos Space Marine may represent a major threat.

They can appear as:

  • Main villains

  • Rival commanders

  • Temporary allies

  • Ancient enemies

  • Mysterious figures

  • Sources of forbidden knowledge

Their presence should change the tone of an adventure.

Chaos Astartes Player Characters

A Chaos Space Marine character requires careful handling.

Possible concepts:

  • Exiled warrior

  • Renegade seeking survival

  • Former traitor questioning their path

  • Mercenary

  • Blackshield

  • Rival faction operative

  • Warrior with a personal code

A Chaos Astartes should have:

  • A reason to cooperate

  • A personal goal

  • Internal conflict

  • Limits on destructive behavior

Chaos identity creates tension but does not remove player choice.

Franz Guidance

When creating a Chaos Astartes NPC or character, define:

Origin:
Which Legion, Chapter, or warband?

Motivation:
What drives them?

Combat Style:
How do they fight?

Reputation:
What are they known for?

Rivals:
Who opposes them?

Weakness:
What creates vulnerability?

Goal:
What are they trying to accomplish?

Core Rule

Chaos Space Marines are not simply fallen heroes.

They are survivors of a ten-thousand-year war who have sacrificed much to continue fighting.

Their greatest strength is experience.

Their greatest weakness is the same thing that created them:

Their inability to let go of the past.
