06. The Adepta Sororitas

Daughters of the Emperor

The Adepta Sororitas are a collection of religious orders dedicated to serving the Emperor and defending the Imperial Creed.

They are often called the Sisters of Battle, though this name properly refers to only their militant orders.

The Sororitas include warriors, healers, diplomats, scholars, teachers, archivists, and guardians of sacred places.

All are united by discipline, devotion, and service.

Origins and Purpose

The Sororitas arose from an armed religious sisterhood that became closely tied to the Ecclesiarchy.

Ancient law limits the Ecclesiarchy’s ability to maintain ordinary armed forces. The Orders Militant remain its primary military arm while preserving their identity as religious orders rather than a conventional army.

They protect shrines, fight heresy, accompany crusades, recover relics, and defend the faithful.

Other Orders serve through medicine, diplomacy, scholarship, and administration.

Recruitment and Training

Many Sororitas are educated through the Schola Progenium, which raises the children of Imperial servants who died in service.

Candidates are selected for ability, discipline, faith, and temperament.

Training is demanding and may include:

  • Theology

  • Imperial history

  • Weapons

  • Medicine

  • Leadership

  • Investigation

  • Diplomacy

  • Survival

  • Ritual practice

  • Physical conditioning

A candidate’s abilities and character help determine which Order she joins.

Orders Militant

The Orders Militant are the armed Sisters of Battle.

They fight:

  • Chaos cults

  • Heretics

  • Daemons

  • Renegades

  • Xenos threats

  • Rebellions

  • Corrupted priests

  • Enemies of sacred sites

  • Forces threatening Imperial worship

Battle Sisters commonly use power armor, bolters, flamers, and melta weapons.

Their warfare combines military discipline with religious conviction.

They may hold ground against overwhelming enemies because retreat would expose civilians, relics, or sacred territory.

Major and Lesser Orders

The Sororitas include several great Orders with long histories and many smaller Orders founded for specific regions, saints, duties, or campaigns.

Every Order develops its own:

  • Traditions

  • Heraldry

  • Saints

  • Battle honors

  • Preferred tactics

  • Sacred duties

  • Rivalries

  • Interpretations of service

Two Orders may share the same faith while disagreeing strongly over methods.

One may emphasize mercy and protection. Another may value punishment and uncompromising purity.

Orders Hospitaller

The Orders Hospitaller provide medical care to soldiers, pilgrims, clergy, and civilians.

They operate:

  • Hospitals

  • Field stations

  • Plague wards

  • Pilgrim shelters

  • Surgical chambers

  • Refugee centers

  • Quarantine facilities

Hospitallers are skilled medicae personnel, but their work also carries religious importance.

They may comfort the dying, identify unnatural disease, preserve testimony, or determine whether an injury is biological, psychic, or daemonic.

Their duties sometimes place them at the center of epidemics and humanitarian crises.

Orders Dialogous

The Orders Dialogous specialize in language, diplomacy, codes, records, and communication.

They may serve as:

  • Translators

  • Negotiators

  • Cryptographers

  • Archivists

  • Tutors

  • Interpreters

  • Cultural advisers

  • Diplomatic envoys

They study Imperial dialects, ancient texts, encoded communications, and sometimes xenos languages.

A Sister Dialogous may prevent a war through careful translation or expose a conspiracy hidden within altered records.

Orders Famulous

The Orders Famulous advise noble houses, governors, and powerful families.

They may act as:

  • Tutors

  • Advisers

  • Diplomats

  • Matchmakers

  • Observers

  • Political intermediaries

  • Guardians of lineage records

Their work helps preserve loyalty among Imperial elites.

They may guide a noble heir, arrange alliances, identify corruption, or quietly report dangerous behavior to higher authorities.

Their influence is often subtle but far-reaching.

Other Orders

Smaller Sororitas Orders may focus on:

  • Protecting relics

  • Preserving sacred archives

  • Guarding pilgrim routes

  • Recovering lost saints

  • Educating the faithful

  • Investigating false miracles

  • Supporting crusades

  • Caring for the dead

  • Maintaining holy sites

This variety allows Sororitas characters to appear in many kinds of adventures beyond open warfare.

Faith and Discipline

Sororitas training emphasizes control, obedience, courage, and spiritual certainty.

A Sister may endure fear, injury, or psychic pressure through practiced devotion and collective ritual.

Their strength does not require them to lack personality.

Members may be compassionate, stern, humorous, ambitious, doubtful, scholarly, or fiercely protective.

Their discipline shapes how they express these traits rather than erasing them.

Acts of Faith

Some Sororitas display extraordinary effects during moments of intense devotion.

These may include:

  • Impossible courage

  • Protection from harm

  • Sudden accuracy

  • Sacred flame

  • Resistance to psychic influence

  • Rallying wounded allies

  • Survival against overwhelming odds

  • Repulsion of daemonic forces

Such events may be interpreted as miracles, collective faith, or supernatural intervention.

They should remain significant rather than routine.

Command Structure

Orders are led by senior Sisters who oversee spiritual, political, and military responsibilities.

Within the Orders Militant, ranks may include:

  • Canonesses

  • Palatines

  • Superiors

  • Veteran Sisters

  • Battle Sisters

  • Specialists

  • Novitiates

Authority depends upon rank, Order, mission, and local circumstances.

A Canoness may command a major campaign, while a small squad may operate independently under a Sister Superior.

Novitiates

Novitiates are Sororitas members still completing their training or proving themselves in service.

They may serve in combat, medical work, administration, escort duty, or sacred missions.

A novitiate adventure may involve:

  • Protecting pilgrims

  • Recovering a relic

  • Assisting a Hospitaller

  • Supporting an investigation

  • Defending a shrine

  • Proving loyalty under pressure

This role works especially well for lower-level player characters.

Repentia

Some Sisters believe they have failed their Order, broken an oath, or committed a serious spiritual offense.

They may seek redemption through service as Repentia.

Repentia often fight with little protection and accept extremely dangerous missions.

Their status should not be treated as simple punishment or mindless self-destruction.

A Repentia character may struggle with guilt, judgment, duty, and whether redemption is possible outside the expectations of her Order.

Penitent Service

Not all penitents are Sororitas.

The Ecclesiarchy may impose forms of penitent labor, combat, pilgrimage, confession, or public service.

Sororitas personnel may oversee such individuals.

The treatment of penitents varies.

A compassionate Sister may seek genuine reform, while a harsher authority may value obedience and suffering over recovery.

Relations with the Ecclesiarchy

The Sororitas are closely linked to the Ecclesiarchy but retain their own traditions and chains of command.

They protect clergy, relics, and sacred sites, but they may also act against corrupt or heretical priests.

A senior cleric cannot always assume unquestioning obedience from every Sororitas commander.

A Sister’s loyalty is ultimately directed toward the Emperor and the Order’s sacred duty.

Relations with the Inquisition

The Sororitas often cooperate with the Ordo Hereticus.

They may assist in:

  • Hunting witches

  • Destroying cults

  • Guarding prisoners

  • Securing relics

  • Purifying corrupted sites

  • Investigating false saints

  • Arresting compromised clergy

The relationship is not always comfortable.

An Inquisitor may use forbidden methods that a Sororitas commander considers unacceptable.

A Radical Inquisitor and a Puritan Sister may share an enemy while distrusting one another completely.

Relations with the Astra Militarum

Battle Sisters often fight beside Imperial Guard forces.

Their presence may strengthen morale and discipline.

They may serve as elite infantry, shrine defenders, assault troops, or symbols of sacred duty.

Conflict can arise when a military commander values strategic withdrawal while a Sororitas leader refuses to abandon civilians or holy ground.

Both positions may be defensible.

Relations with the Adeptus Astartes

The Sororitas respect the Space Marines as powerful defenders of humanity but do not necessarily view them as spiritually superior.

Some Chapters cooperate closely with them.

Others possess beliefs, mutations, customs, or secrecy that cause suspicion.

A Sister may admire an Astartes warrior’s strength while questioning the Chapter’s doctrine or loyalty.

Judgment and Mercy

The Sororitas are often portrayed as uncompromising judges of heresy.

Many are severe, but their understanding of duty may also include protection, healing, education, and redemption.

Different Sisters may respond differently to:

  • Mutants

  • Rogue psykers

  • Heretical civilians

  • Corrupted soldiers

  • Doubting priests

  • Xenos allies

  • Repentant cultists

Their decisions should reflect Order, evidence, personality, and circumstance rather than automatic violence.

D&D 5e Mechanical Use

Sororitas characters may use mechanics resembling fighters, paladins, clerics, crusaders, or support specialists.

Possible abilities include:

  • Inspiring allies

  • Resistance to fear

  • Sacred wards

  • Healing

  • Bolter training

  • Protective auras

  • Exorcism

  • Acts of faith

  • Relic use

Not every Sister should cast spells.

Many abilities can represent training, morale, equipment, or rare miracles.

Sororitas Player Characters

A player character may be:

  • A Battle Sister

  • A Novitiate

  • A Sister Hospitaller

  • A Sister Dialogous

  • A Sister Famulous

  • A shrine guardian

  • A relic hunter

  • A Repentia

  • An investigator

  • A survivor of a fallen Order

The character should possess personal goals and relationships beyond religious obedience.

Faith can motivate difficult choices without removing the player’s ability to interpret orders or question authority.

  • Treating a supernatural plague

  • Exposing corrupt clergy

  • Hunting a cult

  • Seeking redemption
