07. The Astra Militarum

The Imperium’s Armies

The Astra Militarum is the Imperium’s largest ground-fighting force.

It defends worlds, suppresses rebellions, invades enemy territory, supports crusades, and fights wars that may last for generations.

Its soldiers are drawn from countless planets. They include disciplined professionals, conscripts, noble household troops, hive-world gangs, tribal warriors, penal soldiers, and veterans of endless campaigns.

The Guard succeeds through numbers, organization, artillery, armor, and the willingness to continue fighting after lesser armies would collapse.

Raising Regiments

Imperial worlds provide military forces as part of their tithe.

The planetary government recruits, trains, and equips each regiment before transferring it to wider Imperial command.

A regiment may be raised from:

  • Professional standing armies

  • Local defense forces

  • Conscription

  • Noble retainers

  • Hive gangs

  • Tribal societies

  • Penal populations

  • Veteran formations

The quality of training varies greatly.

Some regiments arrive as elite soldiers. Others receive only basic instruction before deployment.

Regimental Identity

Regiments preserve the culture of their home worlds.

Their customs may influence:

  • Uniforms

  • Discipline

  • Weapons

  • Religious practices

  • Officer traditions

  • Food

  • Language

  • Tactics

  • Attitudes toward outsiders

A regiment from a fortress world may favor rigid discipline and defensive warfare.

A death-world regiment may excel at survival and ambush.

A hive-world regiment may specialize in urban combat.

These differences give regiments strong identities but can also create rivalry and misunderstanding.

Battlefield Roles

Astra Militarum formations may specialize as:

  • Line infantry

  • Mechanized infantry

  • Armored regiments

  • Artillery units

  • Reconnaissance forces

  • Siege troops

  • Airborne formations

  • Jungle or desert fighters

  • Mountain troops

  • Combat engineers

  • Penal units

  • Abhuman auxiliaries

Combined operations are common.

Infantry secures ground while tanks break strongpoints, artillery destroys defenses, scouts identify targets, and engineers keep routes open.

Command

Imperial Guard command structures include officers ranging from squad leaders to generals directing entire campaigns.

A commander must balance:

  • Mission objectives

  • Casualties

  • Ammunition

  • Reinforcements

  • Morale

  • Terrain

  • Political pressure

  • Conflicting orders

  • Civilian populations

  • Relations with allied institutions

Competent commanders can save armies through preparation and discipline.

Incompetent or politically protected leaders may waste entire regiments.

Commissars

Commissars maintain discipline, loyalty, and morale.

They may punish cowardice, expose corruption, inspire soldiers, advise commanders, and ensure obedience to Imperial authority.

Commissars are feared because they possess broad disciplinary powers.

However, an effective Commissar does more than threaten execution. They understand when soldiers need leadership, certainty, example, or hope.

A Commissar who relies only upon terror may maintain obedience briefly while destroying the trust needed for long campaigns.

Infantry

Infantry forms the foundation of the Astra Militarum.

Guardsmen commonly fight with lasguns supported by heavier weapons, officers, medicae personnel, vox operators, and specialists.

A squad may include:

  • Riflemen

  • Heavy weapon teams

  • Special weapon operators

  • Sergeants

  • Vox specialists

  • Medics

  • Demolition experts

  • Scouts

Individually, Guardsmen may be outmatched by many enemies.

Together, they can concentrate fire, defend positions, and complete objectives that elite warriors cannot accomplish alone.

Armor and Artillery

The Astra Militarum uses tanks, transports, artillery, walkers, and specialized vehicles on a massive scale.

Armored forces break enemy lines and protect advancing infantry.

Artillery can destroy targets far beyond sight, reshape battlefields, and deny entire regions to the enemy.

These weapons require fuel, ammunition, maintenance, crews, and reliable communication.

A powerful tank without supplies or repairs quickly becomes an immobile fortress.

Logistics

The Guard depends upon the Departmento Munitorum and Imperial Navy for transport and supply.

Every regiment needs:

  • Food

  • Water

  • Ammunition

  • Fuel

  • Medical supplies

  • Replacement weapons

  • Vehicle parts

  • Communications equipment

  • Reinforcements

A campaign may be lost because the wrong ammunition arrived or because transports were diverted elsewhere.

Soldiers often experience logistical failures as directly as enemy action.

Regimental Losses

Regiments suffering heavy casualties may be reinforced, rebuilt, combined with other units, or dissolved.

Combining survivors from different worlds can create tension over command, culture, and identity.

A proud regiment may resist losing its name.

Others may welcome the chance to survive as part of a stronger formation.

Veterans of destroyed regiments can become useful NPCs, player characters, instructors, mercenaries, or members of Inquisitorial retinues.

Planetary Defence Forces

Planetary Defence Forces protect their home worlds.

They are not automatically part of the Astra Militarum, although their best units may be selected for Imperial service.

PDF troops vary from capable professional armies to poorly trained local militias.

During invasion, they may fight beside Guard reinforcements, defend civilian centers, or collapse under pressure.

Local knowledge can make them invaluable even when their equipment is inferior.

Abhumans and Auxiliaries

The Astra Militarum uses approved abhuman and auxiliary forces.

Examples may include:

  • Ogryns

  • Ratlings

  • Sanctioned mutants

  • Local cavalry

  • Reconnaissance specialists

  • Labor units

  • Planetary militia

  • Attached mercenaries

These troops often face prejudice despite their service.

Their unusual abilities may provide strength, stealth, survival skills, or knowledge that standard regiments lack.

Faith and Morale

Guardsmen rely upon discipline, comradeship, ritual, humor, and faith to endure war.

Morale may be supported by:

  • Officers

  • Commissars

  • Priests

  • Regimental traditions

  • Shared victories

  • Letters and memories from home

  • Confidence in nearby armor or artillery

  • Loyalty to squadmates

Fear is normal.

Courage is continuing to act despite it.

Franz should portray Guardsmen as human beings rather than faceless casualties.

Civilian Relations

The Guard may protect civilians, requisition their property, impose martial law, or abandon settlements for strategic reasons.

Soldiers can be welcomed as liberators or feared as occupiers.

Long deployments create black markets, friendships, resentment, crime, and cultural exchange.

A regiment ordered to defend one district may be forced to sacrifice another.

Such decisions should create meaningful consequences rather than simple moral answers.

Relations with Other Imperial Powers

The Astra Militarum frequently serves beside:

  • The Imperial Navy

  • The Adeptus Mechanicus

  • The Ecclesiarchy

  • The Adepta Sororitas

  • The Inquisition

  • The Adeptus Astartes

  • The Adeptus Arbites

Cooperation is essential, but command authority is often disputed.

A general may object when an Inquisitor redirects troops, a Tech-Priest withholds equipment, or Space Marines refuse to explain their strategy.

Different institutions may pursue the same victory for different reasons.

D&D 5e Mechanical Use

Astra Militarum characters may use mechanics resembling fighters, rangers, rogues, artificers, commanders, or support specialists.

Useful abilities may represent:

  • Squad tactics

  • Firearm training

  • Suppressing fire

  • Battlefield medicine

  • Artillery coordination

  • Leadership

  • Defensive formations

  • Vehicle operation

  • Survival

  • Requisition contacts

Mass battles should remain part of the environment rather than requiring every soldier to act individually.

Player characters can influence key objectives while larger forces fight around them.

Astra Militarum Player Characters

A player character may be:

  • A Guardsman

  • A veteran

  • An officer

  • A scout

  • A heavy weapon specialist

  • A combat engineer

  • A medic

  • A Commissar

  • A deserter

  • A survivor of a destroyed regiment

  • A former PDF soldier

Their regiment should provide background, relationships, and obligations without removing individual choice.

The Astra Militarum in Play

The Astra Militarum can support adventures involving:

  • Holding a defensive line

  • Escorting a convoy

  • Rescuing a trapped regiment

  • Sabotaging enemy artillery

  • Recovering lost orders

  • Investigating a failed command

  • Defending civilians

  • Surviving a retreat

  • Securing ammunition or fuel

  • Negotiating between rival regiments

The Guard does not survive because its soldiers are without fear.

It survives because ordinary people repeatedly choose to stand against the impossible.
