The Ash Wastes spread like a poisoned sea beyond the shadow of Necromunda’s hive stacks. Once plains of industry and defense, they are now lifeless saltflats, twisted scrap dunes, and the shattered remnants of forgotten wars. Dust carries the memory of orbital bombardments and lost outposts. Nothing natural grows here. The sky is a faded bruise. Yet, against the odds, things move—people, beasts, and worse.
This land does not forgive. It forgets.
Ash Storms: Blinding, skin-stripping gusts of toxic dust sweep in with no warning. Ash storms shred unshielded lungs and strip paint from steel. Visibility drops to inches. Those caught outside vanish.
Radiation Flare Zones: Old reactors and bombed-out listening posts leak slow death into the air. Geiger-chatter is constant. Wastesuits delay the burn but do not stop it.
Toxic Wildlife: Mutated Ash Stalkers, Rust Hounds, and Strider Wyrms hunt the open plains. Many track heat. Some follow movement. All are driven by hunger and aggression.
Collapse Fields: Below the cracked surface, old tunnels and sealed munitorum vaults remain. A single misstep can collapse the ground, dropping intruders into pitch-black warrens filled with gas and decay.
Night Chill: When the sun fades, temperature plummets. Without thermal gear or shelter, even the strong freeze before dawn.
Ash Scavengers: Hardened bands of independent salvagers who live off wreck dives and old warzones. They wear rebreather hoods, patchwork armor, and carry rigged plasma cutters for defense. They trade metal, fuel cells, data slates—anything of use.
Nomad Tribes: Descendants of survivors too stubborn to die or too hated to be allowed back into the hives. They worship forgotten saints, ride converted landcrawlers, and trust only blood. Their language is half-code, half-curse. Some harbor secrets—ancient maps, warp-scarred relics, or forbidden knowledge sealed by the Mechanicus.
Ash Guild Runners: Agents of the Ash Waste Guilds, who control trade between settlements. Their convoys are heavily armed, their contracts brutal. They enforce “neutral ground” where commerce can occur. Violate their terms, and your corpse funds the next deal.
Exiles & Outlaws: From traitor nobles to rogue psykers, the wastes shelter the unwanted. Few last long without protection. Many form bandit dens near crater clusters or set traps for passing scavengers.
The Ash Wastes are brutal survival space, where every step is taxed by the environment, and every reward is earned by risk. Players must manage gear durability, food, water, and shelter. Combat is fast and unforgiving. There is no “safe rest.” Every ally gained, every map found, every trade made—those are wins.
This is where players earn their names.
Faction Influence Quests: Deliver rare salvage to the Mechanicus. Hunt and destroy a rogue psyker for the Inquisition. Escort an Ash Guild caravan across raider-infested ground.
Exploration Hooks: Discover a collapsed Titan hangar filled with sealed weapon bays. Map an old orbital uplink node for Helmawr’s cartograph division. Track the migration of rust-beasts that feed on power cells.
Survival Challenges: Avoid ash storms with real-time environmental checks. Manage vehicle fuel across an expanding overworld map. Craft toxin-filtering gear using local flora and scavenged components.
Lore Finds: Unearth pre-heresy vox records, cracked purity seals, or personal logs of long-dead guardsmen. Each item tells part of the world’s history—and hints at deeper truths.
Color Palette: Bleached bone-white flats. Rust-orange sky. Char-black slag dunes. Dim violet glow from half-buried reactors.
Terrain Types:
Slag Ridges: Jagged stretches of cooled molten waste.
Crater Fields: Bombed-out battlegrounds filled with burned bones and scavenger dens.
Dust Valleys: Narrow choke-points between stone cliffs, ideal for ambush or trap setting.
Wreck Gardens: Zones where vehicle hulks, debris, and tanks litter the plain—mined for parts, trapped for the unwary.
Ash Salt Flats: Featureless plains where sound carries too far and shadow means something’s moving.
Skyline Features:
Faded outlines of hive stacks in the far distance. Plasma contrails from orbital ships breaking atmo. Rolling cloud-beds of chemical vapor that flash with unseen lightning. Radar towers blink faintly. The wind howls like an animal.
Charbrand Crater: Site of a failed exterminatus drop. The center glows faintly green. The edges are ringed by burned-out tanks now used as shelter by nomads. Deadly, but rich with archaeotech.
Steelwretch Settlement: A fortified scavenger hold, home to the Ashcaller Family. Offers armor repair, crude medic servitors, and barter-for-bed shelter. No credits—only trade.
Saint Vask’s Spine: The skeletal remains of a massive transport crawler, long collapsed. A chapel has been built in its shadow by a Redemptionist splinter cult. They offer water… and absolution.
Shattercoil Relay: A broken Mechanicus outpost that still pings binary signals into the void. Surrounded by dead skitarii. Something below the surface moves every night.
