The Free Isles of Kharos Characters

Starter Player Character — Free Isles of Kharos

Name: Kael “Stormwake” Marris

Race: Human

Class (Suggested): Rogue (Swashbuckler), Fighter (Battle Master), or Bard

Faction: Free Isles of Kharos

Appearance:

Kael is lean and weather-scarred, with salt-bleached hair and a constant sea-squint in his dark eyes. He wears mismatched armor taken from fallen foes, a crimson sash knotted with small trophies, and carries a curved cutlass etched with wave motifs. A faint magical tattoo—gifted by a sea-witch—flickers along his forearm when storms rise.

Backstory:

Born on a drifting isle-ship that later sank in a naval clash with the Gilded League, Kael grew up among pirates, smugglers, and sea-witches who value freedom above law. He learned early that survival in the Free Isles of Kharos depends on loyalty to crew—not crown. After earning his place in a brutal boarding action, Kael now sails as a rising free captain, torn between the Isles’ secret dealings with darker powers and his desire to carve a legend without becoming a monster of the deep.

Important Characters of the Free Isles of Kharos

1. Admiral Vexara Blacktide

Race: Tiefling

Class/Role: Warlock / Pirate Admiral

Title: Storm-Speaker of Kharos

Appearance & Backstory:

Vexara’s crimson skin is etched with glowing runes gifted by an ancient sea entity. Once a lowborn deckhand, she bargained with the deep to shatter League blockades and unify the Free Isles under her command. She secretly brokers intelligence and smuggling routes with the Umbra Dominion, believing shadows make the best shields for piracy.

2. Captain Orrin Saltjaw

Race: Half-Orc

Class/Role: Barbarian / Ship Captain

Title: Warlord of the Ironwake

Appearance & Backstory:

Broad-shouldered and scar-covered, Orrin leads the most feared boarding crews in Kharos. He was once enslaved aboard a League galley before leading a bloody mutiny. Orrin despises structured authority but fiercely defends the Free Isles’ independence—even against fellow pirates who grow too ambitious.

3. Mistress Calyra the Tidemarked

Race: Sea Elf

Class/Role: Sorcerer (Storm/Water)

Title: Sea-Witch of the Black Shoals

Appearance & Backstory:

Calyra’s skin glistens like wet pearl, her eyes glowing sea-green. She binds storms, curses ships, and blesses pirate crews in exchange for relics and secrets. Though loyal to the Free Isles, she warns that the Isles’ dealings with shadow powers may draw something far worse from the depths.

4. Ledger-Master Finnick Quill

Race: Gnome

Class/Role: Rogue / Mastermind

Title: Quartermaster of Secrets

Appearance & Backstory:

Small, sharp-featured, and always smiling, Finnick tracks loot, bribes, and betrayals across the Isles. Once a disgraced League accountant, he fled execution and found freedom among pirates. Finnick ensures captains are paid fairly—or exposed if they cheat—making him indispensable and deeply feared.

5. Captain Ysara Windbound

Race: Air Genasi

Class/Role: Ranger / Sky-Sail Corsair

Title: Mistress of the High Currents

Appearance & Backstory:

Ysara’s pale blue skin and wind-tossed white hair mark her elemental heritage. She commands swift vessels that ride magical air currents above the sea. Unlike many in Kharos, she opposes alliances with Umbra Dominion and seeks to turn the Free Isles into a legitimate maritime power—putting her at odds with darker leaders.
