The Lunarch Ascendancy Lore

Race: Elves, Shadar-kai, Aasimar
Government: Astral Mage-Imperium
Theme: Moon magic, fate, dreams, cyclical power

Origins & Ideology

The Lunarch Ascendancy emerged during the early Third Era, when a conclave of astral scholars and moon-seers unlocked stable methods of anchoring cities within the upper reaches of the sky. Drawing power from lunar cycles and dream-realms, these mages rejected terrestrial rule altogether, believing that true understanding of fate required distance from the world it governed.

The Ascendancy teaches that reality is not fixed, but rhythmic—bound to cycles of waxing and waning influence. Mortals, they claim, suffer because they cling to linear time and permanent certainty. By aligning civilization with the moon’s phases and the mutable logic of dreams, the Lunarchs believe they can guide history rather than be crushed by it.

The Lunarch Ascendancy represents detached dominion: rule justified not by blood, land, or faith, but by mastery over fate’s hidden currents.

Governmental Structure

The Ascendancy is ruled through a rigid magical hierarchy, where authority is derived from astral attunement rather than inheritance.

Key elements of governance:

  • The Lunarchs

    • A small caste of supreme astral rulers

    • Each Lunarch embodies a lunar phase (New, Waxing, Full, Waning)

    • Collective rule ensures balance; no single phase may dominate indefinitely

  • The Astral Conclave

    • Senior mage-lords, dream-weavers, and fate-readers

    • Oversees law, research, and inter-citadel coordination

    • Interprets omens, dreams, and celestial alignments as policy guidance

  • Citadel Regents

    • Administrators assigned to individual floating citadels

    • Responsible for population management, defense, and resource flow

    • Answer directly to the Conclave and their overseeing Lunarch

Governance shifts subtly as lunar phases change, creating periods of expansion, caution, secrecy, or revelation.

Military & Internal Security

The Ascendancy’s forces are designed for precision, control, and overwhelming magical superiority.

Moonbound Legions

  • Elite spell-infused infantry

  • Armor and weapons attuned to lunar phases

  • Strength fluctuates with the moon, peaking during full cycles

Dreamwardens

  • Specialists in dream and mind defense

  • Police the population for forbidden visions or prophetic divergence

  • Suppress nightmares that could destabilize fate-aligned planning

Astral Sentinels

  • Guardians of floating citadels and planar anchors

  • Equipped with gravity-altering and void-shielding magic

  • First line of defense against extraplanar intrusion

Fate Inquisitors

  • Agents tasked with identifying individuals or events that threaten predicted futures

  • Operate covertly across Andorea through dream-projection and astral travel

  • Their existence is officially denied by the Ascendancy

Foreign Relations Context

  • Allied with:
Starfall Principality – Shared astral research and skyborne arcane infrastructure

  • At War with:

    • Umbra Dominion – Shadow corruption of lunar ley-lines

    • The Hollow Crown – Necromancy disrupts the dream–death cycle

The Lunarch Ascendancy rarely wages open war. Instead, it reshapes outcomes long before battles are fought—believing that a future prevented is cleaner than a war won.
