Valshora
The Valshora are an aquatic species native to the deep oceans of water-worlds. They resemble elongated cetaceans, their bodies streamlined for hydrodynamic efficiency, with multiple lateral fins and bioluminescent stripes that pulse in complex rhythmic patterns. They communicate through song—melodies of extraordinary complexity that carry layered meaning across entire planetary oceans.
The Providence encountered the Valshora early in its expansion and recognized their value not as laborers but as cultural assets. Their songs, when properly translated, revealed sophisticated philosophical traditions and a form of fluidic mathematics that @Altaran scholars found genuinely novel. The Valshora were never enslaved; they were patronized, their art collected and their wisdom curated by @Altaran aesthetes who considered them a noble but primitive species worthy of elevation. They were housed in vast water-filled enclosures aboard the great coreships, singing to stars they would never see, their isolation framed as a gift rather than captivity.
Valshora populations survive on several water-worlds in former Providence territory, though the destruction of their original planetary enclosures during the War of the Chosen scattered their cultures. Some have integrated with post-Unity aquatic colonies. Others remain isolated, their songs growing stranger in solitude.
Sul-Talshai
The Sul-Talshai are immense, intelligent beings native to the atmospheres of Jovian worlds. Their core body is a translucent ellipsoidal gas-sac ranging from thirty to eighty meters along its long axis, filled with metabolized atmospheric gases that grant neutral buoyancy. They drift like living dirigibles through the middle atmospheric layers, their bodies faintly luminous from internal bioluminescent reactions. Their intelligence is distributed across a neural network woven throughout the gas-sac membrane, granting them cognitive capabilities that rival the galaxy's finest minds in spatial reasoning and atmospheric modeling.
Beneath the gas-sac dangles a complex of specialized appendages: fine manipulator-tendrils for delicate work, broad grasp-fronds for heavy manipulation, and trailing sensory plumes that detect pressure changes and chemical gradients across thousands of kilometers. They speak through infrasound pulses, their language a slow, musical rumble in frequencies below organic hearing. They think slowly by the standards of smaller species, their thoughts unfolding over minutes or hours, but with a patience and depth born of processing entire weather systems as sensory input.
The Sul-Talshai were technologically primitive when the @Altaran discovered them—their civilization had barely achieved orbital capability, launching crude sublight probes toward neighboring star-systems. The Providence elevated them, trading advanced technology for their service as overseers of the great gas-extraction platforms that skimmed rare compounds from Jovian atmospheres. They are among the few Providence species to have entered @Altaran service voluntarily and to have retained a measure of dignity within the hierarchy.
Sul-Talshai populations persist in the Jovian systems of the @Avandeal Metachor, where their extraction platforms—now maintained by their own engineers rather than @Altaran overseers—continue to operate. They can survive outside their native atmospheres only in specialized exosuits, and their slow reproductive cycle limits their numbers, but their intelligence and patience make them valued trading partners for post-Unity factions that can reach them.
