Crystal City:

The heart of ashfall

Sixty years ago, the Yellowstone caldera erupted in the catastrophe known as "The Fall," plunging the world into a nuclear winter and forging the desolate landscapes of Ashfall. At the very epicenter of this devastation stands the shattered remains of what was once known simply as Crystal City. Its ruins, buried deep in ash, strangled by mutated flora, and picked clean by generations of scavengers, still hold immense value, dangerous secrets, and the answers to the world's greatest mystery: the Crystal Shards and the true nature of The Fall.

The origin of Crystal Shards: primordial power

The fundamental energy source of the Ashfall world, the Crystal Shards, are not merely minerals; they are fragments of vast, ancient crystalline formations that lay dormant deep within the Earth beneath Yellowstone. Unlike common selenite, these primordial crystals are composed of a unique, highly stable matrix heavily enriched with naturally occurring thorium, a radioactive heavy metal. For millennia, under unimaginable pressure and intense geothermal heat, these gargantuan crystals grew, incorporating thorium into their very structure, creating a potent, untapped reservoir of energy.

The technology of the Pre-Fall era detected these unique thorium-rich formations, recognizing their immense potential as an energy source far surpassing any known fuel. The prevailing scientific theory of the time was that these crystals represented a distinct, earlier geological process in Earth's formation, a raw, concentrated power from the planet's infancy.

Crystal City: the beacon of ambition

The metropolis built around the Yellowstone caldera was named Crystal City for several key reasons:

  1. The Source: It was the direct access point to these newly discovered, immense thorium-rich crystal formations. The city's very existence was predicated on the exploitation of this energy.

  2. Architectural Influence: Pre-Fall architects and urban planners incorporated the aesthetic of these glowing, geometrically perfect crystals into the city's design. Towering structures often featured crystalline facades, intricate light-refracting elements, and interconnected skybridges reminiscent of crystal growth patterns. The city was a glittering marvel, powered and inspired by the very resource it sought to harness.

  3. Technological Hub: Crystal City became the global leader in energy research, material science, and the burgeoning field of Crystal-based power generation. It was a hub of innovation, attracting the brightest minds and the wealthiest corporations, all racing to unlock the full potential of the thorium-crystals. This led to rapid advancements in self-healing materials, advanced alloys, and complex AI systems designed to manage the volatile energy source.

The primordial crystal caves: the true heart

Deep beneath the ruined Crystal City, within the fractured caldera, lies the source of it all: the Primordial Crystal Caves. The super volcanic eruption didn't merely expose surface shards; it ripped open vast, previously inaccessible chambers and fissures, pushing segments of these ancient crystal formations towards the surface.

These caves are choked with colossal, translucent crystalline formations, glowing with an eerie internal light, but incredibly dangerous. Their primordial origins mean they hold the purest, most concentrated thorium deposits, making them lethally radioactive. Exploring these depths requires specialized radiation gear, advanced medical tech, or specific Greybloom mutations for survival. The heat and humidity are immense, a lingering echo of the deep geological forces that birthed them.

These caves are the ultimate prize and the greatest danger in Ashfall. They promise untold energy wealth, invaluable pre-Fall knowledge about the crystals and The Fall, and potentially extreme mutations from prolonged exposure to their concentrated radioactive energy. They are the true heart of Ashfall's mystery and the ultimate challenge for those who seek to understand – or exploit – the world's origins.

Why crystal city remains mostly unexplored

Despite 60 years passing since The Fall, large sections of Crystal City remain tantalizingly unexplored, retaining untold amounts of valuable pre-Fall technology, data, and resources. This isn't due to a lack of desire, but a combination of overwhelming dangers that have actively deterred widespread or prolonged scavenging:

  • Intense Radioactivity: The proximity to the caldera and the exposed Primordial Crystal Caves means that many areas, particularly the deeper Ash-Choked Ruins, are bathed in lethal levels of radiation. Without highly specialized, rare, and expensive gear, prolonged survival is impossible, driving away all but the most desperate or well-equipped expeditions.

  • Persistent Greybloom Aggression: The Greybloom Canopy isn't just overgrown; it's teeming with highly aggressive, mutated flora and fauna fiercely territorial over their domain and the crystal shards embedded within the soil. Navigating these biomes means fighting through deadly plants and mutated predators, making deep exploration a constant battle.

  • Automated Defenses: Pockets of the city's advanced AI and robotic security systems might still function. Automated turrets, patrolling drones, or even rogue maintenance bots, operating on corrupted or incomplete directives, could see any intrusion as a threat to be neutralized, creating unpredictable and deadly traps.

  • Environmental Hazards: The city is unstable. Upper levels feature crumbling structures and skybridges susceptible to collapse during dust storms or seismic activity. Deep fissures, boiling geothermal vents, and localized ash flows create ever-changing and unpredictable terrain.

  • The Scale of Ruin: The sheer size of Crystal City and the magnitude of the Ashfall event itself mean that accessing many valuable areas requires extensive excavation, heavy machinery (often unavailable or broken), or daring feats of vertical exploration, none of which are easy or safe.

  • The "Archives Guard" and Other Threats: Legends speak of a powerful AI known as the "Archives Guard" relentlessly protecting pre-Fall data, while other, perhaps more conventional, dangers exist, such as rival Crystal Seekers, heavily armed factions establishing temporary outposts, or mutated humans guarding territories.

These combined factors have transformed Crystal City into a treasure trove of largely untouched ruins, ensuring that vast areas remain unexplored, waiting for courageous — or foolhardy — individuals to brave its myriad dangers and uncover its secrets.
