Elite Coven bodyguards and secret police of the Covenate of Etelel, based primarily in Deepharbor. In war, the Guard spearheads regiments of men-at-arms, mercenaries, and feudal levies against the elves. In peace, the Guard protects the Ruling Coven and quells subversive activities. Armored in plate or half-plate, favoring halberds, poleaxes, and swords, liveried in black and lavender. Officers often bear items of power awarded to them by the Coven.
Non-officer ranks are man-at-arms/knight, corporal, and sergeant/knight sergeant. Non-officer knights are rare, but do occur when a knight wants to join and work his way up. Officer ranks are lieutenant, captain, and colonel. All officers are knighted upon making lieutenant, if they did not already hold such a title.
The Covenate Guard has three regiments, commanded by three colonels, all of whom report to the Ruling Coven. Violet Thornhallow is the colonels' direct overseer. Each regiment has several companies, commanded by a captain, with a lieutenant as his deputy. Each company is made up of roughly 50-100 men-at-arms. Smaller, informal squads are often delegated to a sergeant, who are responsible for the day-to-day leadership of their men.
The three regiments rotate. One always garrisons the Dread Keep, with a single company detached to guard the Academy for Witches. Another is quartered outside the Old City and spearheads counter-subversive operations in Deepharbor and across the Covenate - hunting Royalists who pine for the old monarchy and nobility, monitoring illegal religious gatherings and raiding any agitating groups. The final regiment is stationed at grounds near Verdanton for training.
There are a few additional lieutenants and senior captains outside of direct unit command that act in special roles for the Covenate - Captain Hans as a liaison to the Guild and Lieutenant Thomas as a frontier marshal of local troops and mercenaries are examples.
