Leather Strips

Leather strips were the first form of currency for dragons. Proto-dragons used these when they had nothing to trade. They have logos carved onto them based on who they were made for. Families often carved their family crest onto it, while businesses carved their logos. Since there are so many out there these days, they are mostly used by collectors and small businesses.

Leather strips are used as a Promise of Service, meaning that you can return them to whoever gave you them at a later date and they will have to return what they owe by providing a service. Because they got so popular and helped business, they eventually flooded the market and became a way to get goods before you had the means to get them. A debt more than a form of currency, but it paved the way for it later on.

Today, a lot of old leather strips are collected by dragons who like to display them. This often leads to large museums dedicated to showing of the best of people's collections. It helps to preserve history, and allows non-collectors to get a glimpse of why collecting can be so fun— and valuable.
