The origins of the shinobi world reach far deeper into history than the founding of any modern village.
Long before the current shinobi nations existed, chakra became connected to humanity through events involving Kaguya Ōtsutsuki and the Divine Tree. These events would eventually influence almost every major bloodline, dōjutsu, tailed beast, and conflict in later history.
Kaguya Ōtsutsuki possessed extraordinary power and became associated with the source of chakra on Earth. Her power eventually led to a confrontation with her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura.
Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki later became known as the Sage of Six Paths. His influence became foundational to the later shinobi world.
Originally, chakra was not intended simply as a weapon.
Hagoromo taught a spiritual discipline called Ninshū. The purpose of Ninshū was to connect people through chakra and allow them to understand one another more deeply.
Over generations, humanity increasingly transformed chakra from a spiritual means of connection into a practical tool. Techniques developed for survival, labor, protection, warfare, assassination, and military competition.
This evolution eventually produced what became known as ninjutsu.
The distinction is important.
Ninshū emphasized understanding through chakra.
Ninjutsu emphasized shaping chakra to produce effects.
As humans developed greater control over chakra, they learned to transform its properties, manipulate natural elements, enhance the body, affect the senses, summon creatures, create barriers, seal objects or entities, and produce increasingly specialized techniques.
Some abilities eventually became associated with bloodlines.
Others were developed through secret training systems.
Over generations, entire families became known for particular techniques. These families gradually evolved into organized shinobi clans.
Two bloodlines became especially important to early shinobi history: descendants associated with Indra Ōtsutsuki and descendants associated with Asura Ōtsutsuki.
Indra inherited exceptional natural talent and powerful ocular abilities.
Asura initially possessed less natural brilliance but developed strength through perseverance, cooperation, and bonds with others.
Their philosophical conflict became one of the central recurring struggles in shinobi history.
The descendants associated with their legacies eventually included the Uchiha and Senju clans.
For generations, these clans fought one another.
The conflict between them was not merely personal. It represented different approaches toward power, leadership, trust, inheritance, and cooperation.
Many later shinobi institutions can therefore be understood as attempts to overcome the violence of the clan era.
However, the cycle of conflict never disappeared completely.
Ancient bloodlines, inherited rivalries, political ambition, fear, revenge, and competition continued to influence later generations.
The modern shinobi world should not treat ancient history as information known perfectly by ordinary people.
Most civilians and lower-ranked shinobi know simplified legends about the Sage of Six Paths. Exact information concerning Kaguya, Indra, Asura, the Ten-Tails, and the deepest origins of chakra is extremely rare.
Scholars, ancient clans, certain religious traditions, high-level researchers, and individuals connected to hidden records may possess fragments of this knowledge.
