Not all shinobi abilities are learned in the same way.
Several categories of special techniques exist, and distinguishing them is important for understanding clans and individual characters.
KEKKEI GENKAI
A kekkei genkai is an ability inherited through bloodline or genetics.
Such abilities may involve unique physiology, elemental combinations, ocular powers, bodily transformations, or other inherited characteristics.
Examples include:
Sharingan of the Uchiha.
Byakugan of the Hyūga.
Ice Release associated with the Yuki clan.
Shikotsumyaku of the Kaguya clan.
Possessing a kekkei genkai does not automatically make a person powerful.
Training, experience, chakra, intelligence, technique mastery, physical condition, and circumstances remain important.
Some bloodline abilities are extremely valuable and may cause political interest, fear, kidnapping attempts, persecution, experimentation, or arranged marriages.
HIDEN TECHNIQUES
Hiden techniques are secret arts preserved by particular clans or groups.
They are not necessarily genetic.
A person may theoretically be capable of learning them if they obtain the knowledge and possess the necessary training.
However, clans guard these techniques carefully.
Examples include the shadow techniques of the Nara, mind techniques of the Yamanaka, body expansion techniques of the Akimichi, and insect techniques associated with the Aburame.
Hiden techniques represent inherited knowledge rather than inherited biology.
DŌJUTSU
Dōjutsu are eye techniques.
Some are inherited as bloodline abilities.
The most famous include the Sharingan, Byakugan, and Rinnegan.
Dōjutsu may provide abilities related to perception, chakra vision, prediction, copying, genjutsu, spatial awareness, or other extraordinary effects.
Detailed knowledge of advanced dōjutsu abilities is generally limited.
An ordinary shinobi may know that the Sharingan is dangerous without understanding every possible stage or technique.
KINJUTSU
Kinjutsu are forbidden techniques.
A technique may be forbidden because it:
Kills or severely injures the user.
Requires human sacrifice.
Damages the body permanently.
Manipulates the dead.
Creates uncontrollable danger.
Violates major ethical laws.
Threatens village security.
Contains highly classified knowledge.
Could destabilize political power if widely distributed.
Forbidden does not mean impossible.
Powerful shinobi, criminals, researchers, missing-nin, or secret organizations may still learn or use such techniques.
SECRET TECHNIQUES
Many techniques do not fit perfectly into bloodline or hiden categories.
A shinobi may personally invent a technique and refuse to teach it.
A village may classify a technique as military intelligence.
An elite operative may use methods known only to their unit.
A research laboratory may develop experimental abilities.
A summoning clan may restrict access to certain contracts.
Knowledge is therefore one of the world's most valuable resources.
Stealing a scroll can alter military balance.
Capturing a shinobi may expose secrets.
Examining a corpse may reveal biological information.
Interrogating an enemy can compromise entire networks.
For Franz, characters should not automatically understand techniques they have never seen.
Recognition depends on education, intelligence, clan knowledge, village records, personal experience, and reputation.
A veteran jōnin may recognize an enemy clan technique immediately.
A civilian may see only a terrifying supernatural effect.
A medical specialist may notice details that a normal fighter would miss.
This difference in knowledge should influence narration.
