PAGE 17 — LAND OF WIND

Lore ID: GEO-002

Japanese: 風の国 — Kaze no Kuni

Classification: Five Great Shinobi Country

Primary Hidden Village: Sunagakure

Political Leader: Wind Daimyō

Military Leader: Kazekage

Source Tier: Core Canon

The Land of Wind occupies an enormous southwestern territory dominated by desert.

Its environment is dramatically different from the fertile Land of Fire.

Rainfall is scarce.

Water sources are strategically important.

Settlements frequently depend upon wells, underground reservoirs, oases, trade routes, or carefully controlled supplies.

GEOGRAPHY

Common terrain includes:

Open desert.

Sand dunes.

Rocky plateaus.

Deep canyons.

Dry riverbeds.

Stone formations.

Cliffs.

Oases.

Desert settlements.

Ancient ruins.

Sandstorms can dramatically reduce visibility.

Extreme heat creates dehydration risk.

Night temperatures may drop sharply.

Long-distance travel without preparation is dangerous even before enemies are considered.

SUNAGAKURE

Sunagakure is naturally defended by desert terrain and surrounding rock formations.

Its shinobi developed abilities suited to their homeland.

Suna is especially associated with:

Wind Release.

Puppet techniques.

Poisons.

Long-range combat.

Traps.

Desert tracking.

Ambush tactics.

Survival skills.

Specialized weapons.

Puppet masters may carry extensive equipment and concealed weapon systems.

Poison research became particularly sophisticated.

POLITICAL STRUCTURE

The Wind Daimyō controls the broader nation.

The Kazekage leads Sunagakure.

Historically, relations between the Daimyō's government and Suna have sometimes been strained.

Economic decisions affecting mission contracts can seriously weaken a hidden village.

Before the Konoha Crush, reduced financial support and the transfer of contracts toward Konoha contributed to Sunagakure's political frustration.

Orochimaru exploited this situation.

ECONOMY

The country's environmental limitations make trade particularly important.

Major economic concerns include:

Water.

Food imports.

Caravan routes.

Mining.

Crafting.

Weapon production.

Puppet manufacturing.

Poisons and medicine.

Textiles.

Livestock adapted to dry climates.

Mission income.

Because transport routes cross huge empty regions, caravan protection is valuable.

IMPORTANT REGIONS

Sunagakure.

Great Canyon approaches.

Rock Canyon.

Desert training grounds.

Remote watch posts.

Trade routes.

Ancient ruins.

Demon Desert in anime-expanded material.

Rōran ruins in movie-expanded material.

Some deserts contain abandoned settlements that may have disappeared because of changing water access.

MILITARY HISTORY

Sunagakure participated in multiple major wars.

Chiyo and other veteran shinobi became famous through poison warfare and puppet techniques.

Suna eventually allied with Otogakure during the Konoha Crush.

The operation failed.

Orochimaru had secretly murdered the Fourth Kazekage before impersonating him.

After the invasion, relations between Konoha and Suna changed substantially.

CURRENT STATE — EARLY SHIPPUDEN

Gaara is Fifth Kazekage.

He has transformed from a feared jinchūriki into a respected village leader.

Kankurō and Temari are prominent Suna shinobi.

Gaara still contains Shukaku at campaign start.

Konoha and Suna maintain an alliance.

Akatsuki intends to capture jinchūriki.

Therefore Gaara is a strategically important target.

However, his capture must not be forced simply because it occurred in original canon.

Player actions may alter the outcome.
