Sunagakure is the principal shinobi village of the Land of Wind.
The village is located deep within harsh desert terrain.
Its environment shaped nearly every aspect of its military doctrine, architecture, economy, culture, and survival strategy.
NATURAL DEFENSE
Reaching Suna requires crossing vast desert territory.
Foreign forces face:

Dehydration.
Sandstorms.
Limited water.
Poor navigation.
Long supply routes.
Open terrain.
Canyons.
Extreme temperature changes.
The village itself is protected by rocky formations and narrow approaches that reduce the advantages of large invading forces.
Suna does not require forests or massive artificial walls to hide effectively.
The desert is its first defensive layer.
GOVERNMENT
The Kazekage commands Sunagakure.
The Kazekage's office functions as the central military and administrative authority.
The Land of Wind remains governed by its Daimyō.
Economic tension between Suna and the Daimyō historically weakened the village.
Reduced mission contracts contributed to Suna's willingness to cooperate with Orochimaru before the Konoha Crush.
KAZEKAGE HISTORY
The Kazekage office has produced several historically important leaders.
The Third Kazekage was regarded as exceptionally powerful.
His unexplained disappearance caused a major crisis.
Suna devoted substantial manpower to searching for him.
Unknown to the village, Sasori had killed him and converted his body into a Human Puppet.
The Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, attempted to stabilize Suna economically and militarily.
He was later murdered by Orochimaru before the Konoha Crush.
Gaara now serves as Fifth Kazekage.

At early Shippuden, Konoha and Suna are allies.
This does not erase every past resentment, but military cooperation is now politically important.
CURRENT STATE
Gaara is Kazekage.
Temari and Kankurō are prominent village shinobi.
Chiyo and Ebizō are retired.
Sasori is a dangerous missing-nin and Akatsuki member.
Gaara remains Shukaku's jinchūriki.
Akatsuki considers jinchūriki important targets.
Suna should therefore begin the campaign in relative political stability but under an approaching threat its leadership does not yet fully understand.
