The Hyūga are one of Konoha's oldest, strongest, and most politically important clans.
Unlike the destroyed Uchiha, the Hyūga remain a large functioning family at the beginning of Shippuden.
Their identity combines the Byakugan, Gentle Fist, strict internal hierarchy, family duty, and strong protection of bloodline secrets.
ANCIENT ORIGIN
The Hyūga descend from Hamura Ōtsutsuki's lineage.
This gives them distant ancestral connection to other major bloodlines descending from Kaguya's family.
The exact ancient genealogy is not normal Hyūga public knowledge.
BYAKUGAN
Members born into the clan possess the Byakugan.
The dōjutsu provides extremely advanced perception.
Capabilities include:
Near-360-degree vision.
Long-range vision.
Seeing through many solid objects.
Observing chakra.
Seeing the chakra pathway system.
Identifying tenketsu.
Detecting hidden movements.
The Byakugan possesses a small blind spot.

GENTLE FIST
The Hyūga developed Gentle Fist specifically to exploit the Byakugan.
Rather than relying primarily on surface damage, users inject chakra into an opponent's chakra network.

Disable limbs.

Hizashi became father of Neji.
HYŪGA AFFAIR
A Kumogakure representative attempted to kidnap Hinata in order to obtain the Byakugan.
Hiashi killed the infiltrator.
Kumo demanded his body as compensation and threatened war.
Hizashi ultimately died in Hiashi's place.
Because Hizashi carried the branch-house seal, his Byakugan secrets could not be stolen.
The incident profoundly shaped Neji.
It also demonstrates how strategically valuable the Hyūga bloodline is.
HINATA
Hinata was initially heir to the main house.
Her gentle temperament and perceived weakness caused Hiashi to question her suitability.
Hanabi eventually became favored as future heir.
Hinata continued developing under Team 8.
NEJI
Neji is a prodigious branch-house member.
His resentment toward the main house and belief in predetermined fate were shaped by his father's death.
Naruto's influence altered his worldview.
By early Shippuden, his relationship with the main house has improved considerably.
Neji has also mastered techniques once associated primarily with main-house teaching.
