Lore ID: CLAN-011
Category: GM Clan Simulation Rules
Clans should behave as living social institutions.
They are not simply collections of special abilities.
CLAN LEADERSHIP
Large clans may have:
A clan head.
Senior relatives.
Family council.
Heirs.
Branch families.
Military specialists.
Archivists.
Teachers.
Political representatives.
Succession can depend upon:
Birth.
Ability.
Tradition.
Election.
Senior approval.
Political necessity.
Not every clan uses identical inheritance rules.
HEIRS
Being a clan heir can create expectations.
An heir may be expected to:
Learn protected techniques.
Represent the family politically.
Marry strategically.
Protect clan secrets.
Accept leadership.
Maintain alliances.
Train younger relatives.
Failure can create internal tension.
Hinata's relationship with the Hyūga succession demonstrates this clearly.
MARRIAGE
Marriage can have political meaning.
A marriage may:
Join families.
Transfer social influence.
Create heirs.
Reduce conflict.
Strengthen alliances.
Introduce bloodlines into another family.
However, marriage does not automatically transfer secret techniques to every spouse.
A person marrying into the Hyūga does not instantly awaken Byakugan.
Children may inherit traits depending on bloodline genetics.
ADOPTION
Adopted members can belong socially to a clan without possessing genetic bloodline abilities.
Franz must distinguish:
Family membership.
Bloodline inheritance.
Technique training.
Political status.
These are related but not identical.
BLOODLINE SECURITY
Clans possessing valuable kekkei genkai may guard:
Marriage information.
Birth records.
Corpses.
Medical samples.
Training methods.
Genetic information.
Clan archives.
Enemies may attempt kidnapping specifically to acquire bloodline abilities.
The Hyūga Affair demonstrates this danger.
CORPSE RECOVERY
Recovering a dead clan member may become strategically important.
An enemy medical team could potentially study:
Eyes.
Organs.
Chakra pathways.
DNA.
Unique tissues.
Body modifications.
Village secrets.
Therefore some missions prioritize corpse retrieval even after the target has died.
CLAN COMPOUNDS
Large clans may maintain dedicated districts or compounds.
A compound can contain:
Homes.
Training courtyards.
Meeting halls.
Archives.
Shrines.
Private gardens.
Storage.
Clan businesses.
Medical rooms.
Security.
Not every clan owns an enormous compound.
Small families may simply live throughout the village.
SECRET TECHNIQUES
Clan techniques are valuable intellectual property.
Unauthorized teaching can be considered betrayal.
Stealing scrolls may result in:
Investigation.
Political pressure.
ANBU involvement.
Bounties.
Clan pursuit.
Village prosecution.
A player's ability to physically copy a technique does not mean society accepts the theft.
CLAN REPUTATION
A clan's reputation affects how outsiders react.
Uchiha: Historically powerful, now associated publicly with massacre and tragedy.
Hyūga: Prestigious and powerful.
Nara: Strategic and intelligent.
Yamanaka: Mental and intelligence specialists.
Akimichi: Powerful physical specialists.
Aburame: Quiet, unusual, highly capable trackers.
Inuzuka: Tracking and ninken experts.
Uzumaki: Mostly historical reputation for sealing and longevity.
Reputation can contain stereotypes.
Individuals do not need to match them.
CLAN VS VILLAGE LOYALTY
A shinobi may face conflict between family and village.
Examples:
Uchiha coup crisis.
Hyūga internal law.
Danzō's political philosophy.
Clan secret protection.
Such conflict should be meaningful but rare enough that village institutions can function.
EXTINCT CLANS
An extinct clan can still affect the present through:
Ruins.
Scrolls.
Blood samples.
Descendants.
Weapons.
Debts.
Enemies.
Political claims.
Sealed techniques.
Lost laboratories.
Religion.
An extinct clan is therefore not irrelevant.
SURVIVORS
When Franz creates a hidden survivor of a supposedly destroyed clan, that is a major worldbuilding decision.
It should not happen casually.
A surviving Uchiha, Kaguya, or Uzumaki archive can change political behavior.
Major villages may investigate.
Orochimaru may become interested.
Akatsuki may notice.
NO GENERIC CLAN MEMBERS
Clan NPCs should vary.
Two Nara need not have identical personalities.
Two Uchiha need not awaken the same Sharingan stage.
Two Aburame can host different insect breeds.
Two Inuzuka can have different ninken.
Clan identity creates tendencies and opportunities, not identical characters.
