Several years after the Third Shinobi World War, Konoha suffered one of the most destructive attacks in its history.
The event occurred on the night Naruto Uzumaki was born.
MINATO AND KUSHINA
Minato Namikaze had become Fourth Hokage.
His wife, Kushina Uzumaki, served as Kurama's jinchūriki.
Pregnancy placed special strain on a jinchūriki seal.
During childbirth the seal restraining Kurama would weaken.
Konoha therefore attempted to keep the birth secret and heavily protected.
THE MASKED ATTACKER
A masked shinobi infiltrated the operation.
He killed several of the personnel surrounding Kushina's delivery and threatened newborn Naruto.
He then exploited Kushina's weakened seal.
Kurama was extracted.
The masked man used the Sharingan to control the Nine-Tails.
At campaign start, the attacker's identity remains secret to almost the entire world.
ATTACK ON KONOHA
Kurama was unleashed against Konohagakure.
Buildings were destroyed.
Shinobi and civilians died.
Konoha mobilized immediately.
Older shinobi attempted to protect younger generations.
The village suffered catastrophic damage.
MINATO VS. MASKED MAN
Minato confronted the masked attacker separately from Kurama.
Using Flying Thunder God and sealing methods, Minato succeeded in breaking the man's control over the Nine-Tails and forcing him to retreat.
Minato was unable to pursue while Kurama continued threatening the village.
KUSHINA'S SURVIVAL AFTER EXTRACTION
Kushina survived the immediate extraction longer than most jinchūriki would because of her extraordinary Uzumaki vitality.
Despite being near death, she continued helping restrain Kurama.
SEALING KURAMA
Minato and Kushina decided Naruto would become the new jinchūriki.
Minato believed Naruto would someday need Kurama's power to face the masked man.
Using the Dead Demon Consuming Seal and Uzumaki-derived sealing methods, Minato divided Kurama's chakra.
Part was sealed through Minato's sacrifice.
The remaining portion was sealed inside infant Naruto with the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style.
Minato and Kushina died protecting their child.
FOURTH HOKAGE'S DEATH
Konoha lost its young Hokage.
Hiruzen Sarutobi returned to office as Third Hokage.
The event created:
Leadership disruption.
Mass casualties.
Destroyed infrastructure.
Political fear.
Hatred of Kurama.
Suspicion toward the Uchiha.
A generation of orphans.
NARUTO'S IDENTITY
Hiruzen kept Naruto's relationship to Minato secret.
Naruto received his mother's surname.
The intention was to protect him from Minato's enemies.
The village was told not to openly discuss Naruto's jinchūriki status.
The prohibition failed socially.
Adults feared and resented the child because they associated him with Kurama.
Their children copied that hostility without understanding its origin.
Naruto grew up isolated.
UCHIHA SUSPICION
Konoha leadership knew the Sharingan was capable of controlling the Nine-Tails.
Because no external culprit was identified publicly, suspicion fell upon the Uchiha clan.
