PAGE 68 — NARUTO'S GENERATION: TEAM 7, LAND OF WAVES & CHŪNIN EXAMS

Lore ID: HIST-008

Era: Naruto Part I — Early Period

Status: Completed Before Campaign Start

Years after the Uchiha Massacre, Naruto Uzumaki's generation graduated from the Konoha Academy.

This generation would become central to the future of the village.

NARUTO'S GRADUATION

Naruto initially failed the standard graduation examination.

Mizuki manipulated him into stealing the Scroll of Seals.

Naruto learned the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique.

Iruka Umino confronted both Naruto and Mizuki.

Iruka openly acknowledged Naruto as an individual rather than simply Kurama's container.

Naruto defeated Mizuki.

He received his forehead protector and became a genin.

TEAM 7

Naruto was assigned to Team 7 alongside:

Sasuke Uchiha.

Sakura Haruno.

Their jōnin instructor was Kakashi Hatake.

Each began with different motivations.

Naruto sought recognition and the Hokage title.

Sakura was strongly interested in Sasuke.

Sasuke sought power to kill Itachi.

Kakashi tested them using the bell exercise.

They passed only after demonstrating willingness to prioritize teamwork.

LAND OF WAVES MISSION

Team 7's first major mission involved protecting bridge builder Tazuna.

The mission was initially presented as lower-risk than it actually was.

Tazuna concealed the scale of the danger because the impoverished Land of Waves could not afford the correct mission classification.

This became an important example of incorrect mission intelligence.

GATŌ

Shipping magnate Gatō had economically dominated the Land of Waves.

Tazuna's bridge threatened his monopoly.

Gatō hired missing-nin and mercenaries to prevent completion.

ZABUZA MOMOCHI

Zabuza was an elite Kirigakure missing-nin.

He had previously been associated with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen tradition.

Kakashi fought him using the Sharingan.

The encounter exposed Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to combat far beyond normal genin expectations.

HAKU

Haku possessed the Yuki clan's Ice Release.

He followed Zabuza with extraordinary loyalty.

During the final battle, Haku died protecting Zabuza from Kakashi.

Zabuza initially attempted to suppress his emotions but ultimately reacted to Naruto's condemnation.

He killed Gatō before dying from his wounds.

CONSEQUENCES OF THE WAVES MISSION

Gatō's power collapsed.

The bridge was completed.

It became known as the Great Naruto Bridge.

Team 7 returned with far greater understanding of:

Death.

Missing-nin.

Kekkei genkai.

Mission deception.

The emotional cost of shinobi life.

Naruto in particular rejected the idea that shinobi must simply exist as tools.

The Land of Waves mission was Team 7's first major operation and ended with Gatō's downfall, Zabuza and Haku's deaths, and completion of the bridge.

CHŪNIN EXAMS

Konoha later hosted international Chūnin Exams.

Participants came from several villages, including:

Konohagakure.

Sunagakure.

Amegakure.

Kusagakure.

Takigakure.

Otogakure.

The Exams served multiple purposes.

They evaluated leadership.

They showcased village talent.

They attracted clients.

They functioned as political demonstrations of military quality.

OROCHIMARU INFILTRATION

Orochimaru infiltrated the Exams.

He targeted Sasuke.

During the Forest of Death stage, Orochimaru placed the Cursed Seal of Heaven on him.

The seal offered power but also created physical and psychological danger.

Orochimaru's interest in Sasuke was tied to the Sharingan and his own body-transfer ambitions.

KONOHA ROOKIE GENERATION

The Exams brought Naruto's generation into direct competition.

Important participants included:

Naruto.

Sasuke.

Sakura.

Shikamaru.

Ino.

Chōji.

Hinata.

Kiba.

Shino.

Neji.

Lee.

Tenten.

The Sand Siblings also participated:

Gaara.

Temari.

Kankurō.

GAARA

Gaara entered as Sunagakure's jinchūriki weapon.

His psychological state was unstable.

His ability and willingness to kill made him terrifying even among experienced genin.

NEJI VS. HINATA

The Hyūga conflict became visible through Neji and Hinata.

Their battle reflected the main-house/branch-house system and Hizashi's death.

NARUTO VS. NEJI

Naruto later defeated Neji.

The battle challenged Neji's belief that destiny could never be changed.

SHIKAMARU'S PROMOTION

Shikamaru demonstrated exceptional judgment even when he withdrew from his match.

He became the only participant from this examination ultimately promoted to chūnin.

EXAMS INTERRUPTED

The finals never concluded normally.

The Exams had been used as cover for an invasion.

The Chūnin Exams introduced the wider Konoha generation and were infiltrated by Orochimaru; the event led directly into the Konoha Crush.
