PAGE 75 — THE THREE GREAT SAGE REGIONS & MOUNT KATSURAGI

Lore ID: LOC-001
Category: Legendary / Supernatural Locations
Knowledge Level: Rare / Restricted
Campaign Importance: Extreme

Certain places in the Shinobi World exist outside ordinary political geography.

They are not hidden villages, countries, or normal training grounds.

These locations are associated with ancient creatures, natural energy, summoning traditions, senjutsu, secret techniques, and knowledge unavailable to ordinary shinobi.

The three most famous are:

Mount Myōboku.

Ryūchi Cave.

Shikkotsu Forest.

Together they are regarded as the three legendary unexplored sage regions.

Their existence may be known through shinobi legend, but access and detailed knowledge are extremely restricted.

MOUNT MYŌBOKU

Japanese: 妙木山 — Myōbokuzan
Alternative Names: Mountain of Bewilderment / Land of Toads
Classification: Legendary Sage Region
Primary Inhabitants: Toads
Highest Authority: Great Toad Sage Gamamaru
Important Elders: Fukasaku and Shima
Known Human Connections: Jiraiya, Minato Namikaze; Naruto has not yet undergone Sage training at campaign start
Source Tier: Core Canon

Mount Myōboku is the homeland of the toads and one of the most important supernatural locations in the Shinobi World.

It is an ancient, remote environment inhabited by toads ranging from tiny individuals to creatures large enough to fight Bijū-sized enemies.

The region contains:

Enormous mountains.

Unusual vegetation.

Massive stone formations.

Waterfalls.

Toad settlements.

Training areas.

Sacred locations.

Natural-energy training sites.

Architecture sized for creatures vastly larger than humans.

Mount Myōboku should feel like an independent ancient civilization rather than merely a summoning kennel.

TOAD SOCIETY

The toads possess their own hierarchy.

The Great Toad Sage, Gamamaru, holds the highest spiritual authority.

Fukasaku and Shima are elder sages.

Gamabunta is an exceptionally powerful combat summon but does not represent the supreme authority of the entire realm.

Other important toads include:

Gamakichi.

Gamatatsu.

Gamaken.

Gamahiro.

Gerotora.

Various messenger, warrior, and elder toads.

Toads possess personalities, opinions, family relationships, rivalries, duties, and their own traditions.

A summoning contract does not make them slaves.

SUMMONING CONTRACT

Humans can form a contract with the toads.

A contract allows summoning techniques to call appropriate toads across space.

The summoned creature still retains personal agency.

A powerful toad may refuse to cooperate with someone it does not respect.

The relationship therefore develops through trust.

JIRAIYA

Jiraiya possesses one of the strongest human connections to Mount Myōboku.

He trained there and developed senjutsu ability.

Fukasaku and Shima know him personally.

His relationship with the toads provides Jiraiya with:

Summons.

Intelligence.

Mobility.

Combat support.

Senjutsu knowledge.

Prophetic connections.

MINATO

Minato Namikaze also signed the toad contract.

Gamabunta fought alongside Minato during the Nine-Tails attack.

This gives the toads historical knowledge concerning the Fourth Hokage unavailable to many humans.

NARUTO AT CAMPAIGN START

Naruto already possesses the toad summoning contract because Jiraiya trained him before Shippuden.

However:

Naruto has not yet trained in Sage Mode.

He has not undergone the later Mount Myōboku senjutsu training.

He does not possess Sage Mode.

He should not automatically know every secret of Mount Myōboku.

This is a critical timeline rule.

NATURAL ENERGY

Mount Myōboku teaches methods for gathering natural energy.

Improper balance between:

Physical energy.

Spiritual energy.

Natural energy.

can be extremely dangerous.

Toad senjutsu training should not be treated as an ordinary class at a public academy.

It requires rare access, exceptional chakra control, physical resilience, and teachers willing to instruct the student.

PROPHECY

Gamamaru possesses prophetic abilities.

His visions can be significant but should not function as perfect tactical foresight.

Prophecy is often symbolic, incomplete, or understood only afterward.

Franz must not use the Great Toad Sage as an unlimited answer machine.

Mount Myōboku is canonically one of the three legendary sage regions and the homeland of the toad summons associated with Jiraiya, Minato, and later Naruto.

RYŪCHI CAVE

Japanese: 龍地洞 — Ryūchidō
Meaning: Dragon Ground Cave
Classification: Legendary Sage Region
Primary Inhabitants: Snakes
Highest Known Authority: White Snake Sage
Known Human Connections: Orochimaru; later Kabuto
Source Tier: Core Canon

Ryūchi Cave is the legendary homeland of powerful snakes.

Its atmosphere and culture differ sharply from Mount Myōboku.

Where toads can form long-term cooperative relationships with humans, many snakes are predatory, dangerous, or willing to kill those who prove weak.

ENVIRONMENT

The region is associated with:

Caverns.

Underground passages.

Large chambers.

Wetlands.

Ancient stone structures.

Dense vegetation.

Snake nests.

Natural-energy concentrations.

The true extent of the location is poorly understood by outsiders.

WHITE SNAKE SAGE

The White Snake Sage represents the highest known senjutsu authority of Ryūchi Cave.

Reaching the Sage does not automatically mean receiving training.

The snake tradition values survival and transformation very differently from the toads.

OROCHIMARU

Orochimaru discovered the connection between Ryūchi Cave's natural energy and the unusual physiology of Jūgo's lineage.

This research became extremely important.

It eventually contributed to Orochimaru's understanding of:

Natural energy.

Jūgo's transformation.

Cursed seals.

Body modification.

Senjutsu-related biology.

Orochimaru possesses significant knowledge of Ryūchi Cave but did not successfully achieve complete Sage Mode in the way Kabuto later does.

SNAKE SUMMONS

Major snake summons include individuals such as Manda.

Snakes do not necessarily obey through affection.

Power, offerings, intimidation, contracts, and mutual utility may influence their relationships with summoners.

Manda in particular is arrogant and dangerous.

Even Orochimaru cannot casually treat such creatures as disposable servants.

CAMPAIGN START

Orochimaru knows Ryūchi Cave.

Kabuto is alive and possesses extensive biological knowledge.

However, Kabuto has not yet undergone the later transformation that grants him his mature Sage Mode.

Ryūchi Cave should therefore remain a dangerous potential future location rather than a routine destination.

Ryūchi Cave is one of the three great unexplored sage regions, home to the White Snake Sage, and the place where Orochimaru investigated the origin of Jūgo's clan abilities.

SHIKKOTSU FOREST

Japanese: 湿骨林 — Shikkotsurin
Meaning: Damp Bone Forest
Classification: Legendary Sage Region
Primary Known Inhabitant: Katsuyu
Known Human Connection: Tsunade; Sakura later demonstrates the contract
Source Tier: Core Canon

Shikkotsu Forest is the third of the legendary sage regions.

Unlike Mount Myōboku and Ryūchi Cave, very little confirmed information exists about its geography, society, or training systems.

This uncertainty must be preserved.

KATSUYU

Katsuyu is the enormous slug associated with Shikkotsu Forest.

Human summoners generally summon only portions of Katsuyu's true body.

Katsuyu can divide into many smaller bodies while maintaining communication.

This makes her extraordinarily valuable for:

Medical support.

Large-scale healing.

Communication.

Protecting wounded individuals.

Distributing information across a battlefield.

Tsunade possesses a strong summoning relationship with Katsuyu.

IMPORTANT CANON LIMIT

Franz must not automatically invent:

A Slug Sage.

A confirmed Shikkotsu Sage Mode.

A detailed slug civilization.

A named ruler.

A known entrance.

Specific trials.

unless Living Shinobi World deliberately establishes these as Campaign Expansion.

Canon establishes Shikkotsu Forest's importance and Katsuyu's residence, but provides far less detail than Mount Myōboku or Ryūchi Cave.

MOUNT KATSURAGI

Japanese: 葛城山 — Katsuragizan
Classification: Restricted Kinjutsu Sanctuary
Associated Clan: Tsuchigumo
Source Tier: Anime Expanded

Mount Katsuragi is associated with the dangerous forbidden technique of the Tsuchigumo clan.

The mountain became a refuge for followers loyal to En no Gyōja.

DEFENSES

The location is protected by:

A powerful barrier.

Numerous traps.

Difficult terrain.

Restricted access.

The defenses exist specifically to prevent outsiders from obtaining the Tsuchigumo kinjutsu.

HOTARU AND TONBEE

Hotaru and Tonbee are connected to the mountain in expanded continuity.

The declining number of defenders makes the location increasingly vulnerable despite the strength of its barriers.

CAMPAIGN FUNCTION

Mount Katsuragi is ideal for:

Forbidden-technique missions.

Konoha treaty obligations.

Protective assignments.

Criminal groups seeking kinjutsu.

Barrier-breaking missions.

Tsuchigumo history.

However, because the location originates primarily from anime-expanded lore, Franz should classify it accordingly.

Its kinjutsu must not become a common spell reward.

Mount Katsuragi is specifically protected by a barrier and extensive traps because it houses the Tsuchigumo clan's dangerous forbidden technique.
