He wanted to test his abilities.
He became a criminal.
Sasuke survived.
The true history is much more complicated.
Following the Nine-Tails attack, Konoha leadership increasingly suspected the Uchiha.
The clan was isolated and monitored.
Fugaku and other clan leaders eventually prepared a coup.
Itachi became caught between clan and village.
Shisui attempted to prevent conflict using Kotoamatsukami.
Danzō took one of Shisui's eyes.
Shisui died after entrusting his remaining eye to Itachi.
Hiruzen preferred negotiation.
Danzō believed the coup needed to be eliminated before civil war began.
Itachi was forced into an extreme choice.
He ultimately killed most of the Uchiha with assistance from the masked man he believed to be Madara.
He spared Sasuke.
Itachi accepted the identity of criminal to preserve Sasuke and protect Konoha's reputation.
He later joined Akatsuki while maintaining hidden interest in Konoha's safety.
Itachi also threatened Danzō against harming Sasuke.
Sasuke knows none of this at campaign start.
The massacre's political cause and Itachi's covert motives remained successfully hidden for years.
Itachi suffers from a severe illness.
He hides the condition.
He uses medicine to prolong his life.
His apparent physical limits cannot always be explained merely by chakra exhaustion.
Sasuke does not know the extent of his illness.
Kisame may recognize signs of declining health but does not possess the entire truth.
This illness affects Itachi's long-term calculations.
It does not make him harmless.
Danzō secretly possesses Shisui Uchiha's Sharingan.
He also possesses a modified right arm containing multiple implanted Sharingan and Hashirama-derived biological material.
This is not public Konoha knowledge.
Even many senior shinobi would be horrified by the extent of these modifications.
Danzō keeps the arm sealed and concealed.
These modifications give him access to abilities that should not naturally belong to a Shimura.
Danzō's concealed right arm contains multiple Sharingan and Hashirama cells, while his own transplanted eye belonged to Shisui.
Root is not simply another normal ANBU department.
Danzō maintains loyal operatives, hidden facilities, secret missions, and political networks.

Manipulate foreign events.

Naruto does not know Yamato at campaign start.
Jūgo's body naturally absorbs natural energy.
Orochimaru studied him.
Research into Jūgo's physiology helped produce the biological basis for Orochimaru's cursed seals.
Therefore cursed-seal transformation is indirectly connected to natural energy.
Most cursed-seal users do not understand this.
Sasuke knows how to exploit his seal but does not possess Orochimaru's complete research history.

all exist and are connected to Orochimaru's facilities at campaign start.
They are not yet Hebi or Taka.

The Third Kazekage did not simply disappear.
Sasori kidnapped and killed him.
Sasori transformed the Third Kazekage's corpse into a Human Puppet.
This allows Sasori to use abilities connected to the Third Kazekage, including Iron Sand.
Sunagakure does not know the complete truth at campaign start.
Chiyo knows Sasori is extraordinarily dangerous but does not automatically know every puppet in his collection.
Sasori's assassination and conversion of the Third Kazekage into a Human Puppet is hidden history unknown to Suna for years.

Minato Namikaze, Fourth Hokage.
Naruto's mother:
Kushina Uzumaki, former Nine-Tails jinchūriki.
Naruto does not know this.
Hiruzen deliberately concealed Naruto's parentage partly to protect him from Minato's enemies.
Naruto received the Uzumaki surname rather than being publicly known as Naruto Namikaze.

A secret must not become known simply because the player asks an NPC the correct question.
NPCs can:
Lie.
Refuse.
Misunderstand.
Possess only partial information.
Believe false history.
Revealing one secret may change the world.
