Blackwater

Lore

Blackwater is one of the most mysterious worlds within human colonial space. Nearly ninety-eight percent of its surface is covered by deep oceans, with only scattered island chains, volcanic archipelagos, and coral atolls breaking the endless sea. Humanity has explored more of some neighboring star systems than it has the depths of Blackwater's oceans.

The first colony ships arrived believing the planet would become a center for fishing and marine resource extraction. Those expectations were quickly exceeded. Beneath its waves lie immense deposits of rare minerals, geothermal vents capable of powering entire colonies, and marine ecosystems unlike anything discovered on Earth. Floating cities soon spread across the calmer equatorial waters while offshore drilling platforms, research stations, and underwater mining facilities expanded into the abyss.

Life on Blackwater is inseparable from the ocean. Entire communities live aboard interconnected floating platforms that rise and fall with the tides. Cargo moves between colonies by heavy transport ships, submersibles, and amphibious aircraft capable of operating during the planet's violent storms. Most children learn to swim before they learn to read, and nearly every profession depends on the sea in some way.

The oceans remain largely unexplored. Pressure increases so rapidly that only specialized submersibles can reach the deepest trenches, many of which extend far beyond the limits of conventional exploration. Sonar surveys have repeatedly detected impossible caverns, moving objects of extraordinary size, and artificial geometric formations resting on the seabed. Most findings remain classified while corporate expeditions quietly compete to uncover whatever lies below.

Colonial Marines maintain rapid-response detachments throughout the planet, protecting offshore platforms from piracy, escorting research expeditions, conducting search-and-rescue missions, and responding to emergencies far from established settlements. Storms can isolate colonies for days, forcing Marines to operate independently until relief arrives.

To visitors, Blackwater appears peaceful from orbit—a blue jewel covered in endless ocean. Beneath its surface lies a frontier that humanity has only begun to understand, where every dive may uncover something never before seen by human eyes.
