Upon the Winds: Part 02

Sky-Holds: The Pinnacle of Sovereign Sorcery

Among the vast wonders and terrifying horrors of Terra, few phenomena stir such profound awe—or absolute dread—as the Sky-Holds. In an age increasingly defined by the soot of Nadaren's coal fires, the thunder of rifled artillery, and the fragile silk envelopes of emerging airship flotillas, these ancient, floating fortresses stand as towering monuments to an entirely different epoch of power. They are not products of steam, steel, or mechanical lift; they are colossal masses of stone, earth, and ancient masonry torn from the world's crust and suspended in the heavens by the unyielding, individual will of a master sorcerer.

To understand a Sky-Hold is to understand the absolute ceiling of magical mastery. They are exceedingly rare, with fewer than a half-dozen known to exist across the world, precisely because the requirements to create and sustain one defy the capacities of ordinary mortals and sovereign states alike.

I. The Mechanics of Levitation & The Power Focus

Unlike standard spellcraft, which manifests in transient bursts of energy, lifting millions of tons of granite into the sky requires a continuous, immense gravitational displacement field. The fundamental law governing all Sky-Holds is absolute and uncompromising: they require a single, refined power focus to maintain altitude.

The Central Conduit

At the heart of every Sky-Hold lies a massive focal point—often a hyper-dense monolith of ley-line crystal, a raw core of fallen star-iron, or a soul-bound phylactery of immense proportions. This focus acts as a permanent dimensional anchor, continuously channeling raw magical energy into the gravitational matrix holding the fortress aloft.

However, a focus is not an autonomous machine; it is a lens. It cannot direct or shape the magic on its own. It requires the constant, active mental tether of an archmage to govern its output, balance its shifting center of mass against atmospheric turbulence, and prevent the focal energy from imploding.

The Catastrophic Vulnerability: Free Fall

This reliance on a singular power focus is both the Sky-Hold’s greatest strength and its most fatal vulnerability. The energy required to hover a mountain is so immense that there is no magical buffer or secondary redundancy possible.

If the power focus is shattered, unaligned, or severed from its archmage, the gravitational field collapses instantly.

The result is not a gentle glide or a slow descent, but an immediate, terrifying free fall. A sky-hold stripped of its focus becomes a multi-million-ton kinetic meteor. The impact of a falling Sky-Hold is catastrophic, capable of flattening entire cities, cracking tectonic plates, and leaving cratered, toxic wastes in its wake. Because of this absolute vulnerability, the chamber housing the power focus is always the most heavily ward-encrusted, physically isolated, and fiercely defended inner sanctum of the entire citadel.

II. The Sovereign Archmages: Unbound Power

In the modern geopolitical landscape, nations like Nadaren field massed ranks of disciplined riflemen and artillery teams, operating on the premise that short-lived mortals can overcome magic through rapid industrial iteration. However, the archmages who command Sky-Holds exist completely outside this paradigm.

Beyond State Allegiance

A mage capable of tearing a fortress from the earth and holding it in the clouds possesses a level of spellcraft that no mortal government can command, bribe, or intimidate. Nations do not employ Sky-Hold masters; states pay tribute to them or pray for their neutrality.

An individual with the willpower and magical reserve to sustain a Sky-Hold is, by definition, a power unto themselves—a walking sovereign nation. To submit to a king, a parliament, or a military council would mean subjecting godlike capability to the whims of lesser minds. Consequently, these mages operate as autonomous warlords, reclusive scholars, or living deities, surrounded by personal cults, loyal retinues, and private armies.

Followers of the High Citadel

Those who live beneath the shadow of a Sky-Hold do so out of intense devotion, necessity, or the promise of absolute protection. A Sky-Hold offers its inhabitants something no terrestrial city can guarantee: total immunity from ground wars, imperial expansion, and the creeping industrial pollution choking the lower valleys.

  • Arcane Scholars & Disciples: Drawn by the chance to study under a living legend, hundreds of aspiring mages staff the libraries, laboratories, and scrying towers of the hold.

  • Elite Airborne Retinues: Sky-Holds host specialized martial forces—garrisons trained in aerial interception, hippogriff or wyvern riders, and elite shock troops equipped with feather-fall wards for ground drop operations.

  • Refugees & Cultists: Entire communities often settle on the upper terraces of a Sky-Hold, farming high-altitude terrace gardens and worshiping the archmage as a protector god in exchange for labor, maintenance, and devotion.

III. Airborne Defenses: The Impregnable Zenith

Standard military doctrine—sieges, sapping, battering rams, and traditional artillery barrages—is completely useless against a Sky-Hold. Suspended miles above the clouds, a floating citadel redefines defensive architecture, turning height into an absolute weapon.

Immunity to Terrestrial Siege

To besiege a stronghold, an attacking army must surround it, cut off its supplies, and batter down its walls. A Sky-Hold renders all three impossible:

  1. Supply Line Immunity: Sky-Holds can relocate across continents to harvest rain clouds, intercept high-altitude trade, or descend briefly over friendly territories to stock up on raw materials before ascending back into the unreachable upper atmosphere.

  2. Inaccessibility to Ground Artillery: Neither standard field cannons, heavy siege mortars, nor the massed rifled salvos of Nadaren's grand artillery have the elevation angle or explosive yield to reach cruising altitudes. Long before an iron shell comes close to the citadel, gravity robs it of kinetic energy, sending it tumbling harmlessly back to earth.

  3. Natural Environmental Shields: At operational altitudes, Sky-Holds are enveloped in sub-zero temperatures, gale-force jet streams, and thin, suffocating air. Unprepared attackers freeze or suffocate long before reaching the outer ramparts.

Specialized Defensive Systems

Because ground assaults are impossible, a Sky-Hold's defenses are engineered entirely to counter aerial threats:

  • Gravitational Down-Drafts: By channeling secondary energy from the power focus, the master sorcerer can invert local gravity directly beneath the hull. Any approaching airship, thermal glider, or flying beast that attempts to pass under the hold is violently slammed into the earth below.

  • Thermal Gas & Storm Weaving: Sky-Holds frequently anchor themselves inside perpetual thunderheads created by their own magical leakage. Approaching airships run a gauntlet of chain-lightning, gale-force winds, and atmospheric pressure changes that tear lifting envelopes to shreds.

  • Arcane Deflection Lattices: Wards encircle the underside of the stone island, designed specifically to detonate incoming explosive shells or reflect long-range elemental spells back toward their casters.

IV. Threats to a Sky-Hold: Peer Warfare

If a ground army cannot besiege a Sky-Hold, and traditional airships are too slow, fragile, and lightly armed to breach its wards, what can actually threaten one? In truth, the list of genuine threats is remarkably short.

1. Another Sky-Hold (Peer-Level Conflict)

The ultimate aerial conflict is the clash between two Sky-Holds. When two floating citadels lock in battle, it is not merely a war of weapons, but a direct collision of archmages.

  • Focal Interlock: The primary objective in hold-against-hold warfare is to disrupt or siphon the enemy's power focus. Mages exchange high-tier dimensional strikes, tectonic gravity-crushes, and concentrated solar or lightning beams aimed directly at the rival sanctum.

  • Planar Boarding Actions: Specialized drop-squads and summoned horrors are launched via high-velocity displacement corridors or wyvern mounts to land on the opposing hold's upper decks, fighting their way down into the focal vaults to plant destruction wards directly on the central core.

  • 2. High-Altitude Infiltration by Specialized Races

While surface armies are useless, certain elder and subterranean races possess unique capabilities that pose lethal risks:

    • The Dokkalfar: As detailed in A Summary of the Peoples, the Dokkalfar reject noisy surface technology in favor of absolute pragmatism, shadow magic, and silent clockwork artifice. Operating with sub-second precision, a small team of Dokkalfar umbral-infiltrators can bypass outer magical wards by stepping through the dark shadows cast by the floating island itself. Once inside, they do not fight the garrison; they plant silent, sub-second clockwork gear-traps or volatile alchemical charges directly on the power focus and vanish, letting gravity finish the job.

    • Ljosalfar Sky-Weavers: The Ljosalfar (High Elves) possess ancient light magic capable of focusing raw solar energy into razor-thin beams of infinite heat. Operating from ivory glass spires miles away, a circle of Ljosalfar mages can construct a solar lens array that pierces through a Sky-Hold's outer stone hull, aiming to melt the power focus into slag without ever mounting an airborne boarding action.

    3. Internal Sabotage & Archmage Exhaustion

Because the entire existence of the Sky-Hold rests upon the mind of a single sorcerer, the archmage themselves is the ultimate single point of failure.

    • Mind Rot & Hexes: Hex-Weavers from the Wild Blood Host or rogue necromancers who manage to slip a curse through the wards do not need to shatter the fortress; they only need to induce a few seconds of unconsciousness, intense agony, or mental madness in the archmage. The momentary loss of focus will sever the gravitational tether, sending the hold into an unrecoverable dive.
