Naming Conventions

Dragon Names

Dragon Names all @Dragon names end in the suffix "-th". Dragons are born knowing their names and communicate their names telepathically to their new bond mates. Dragon memory doesn't allow them to remember many names of other people or places unless they are well liked, so they would describe a person instead.

Rider Names

Dragons will slur the names of their male @Dragonrider when talking to each other. This became known as an "honorific" and @Weyrfolk will give their children names that can be easily shortened, assuming they will eventually become dragonriders themselves. Weyrfolk also tend to name their children with pieces of both parents' names. Male riders typically shorten their names with an apostrophe after the first letter to derive a shortened version. Female riders do not shorten their name.

Examples:

@F'lar, son of Falloner (F'lon as a dragonrider) and Larna, was born Fallarnon
F'nor, son of Falloner and Manora, was born Famanoran
@F'lessan, son of F'lar and Lessa, was born Felessan

Holders

@Holders often give their children names with syllables from one or both parents.

Watch-Whers

@Watch-Wher names end in the "-sk" suffix, with few exceptions. Watch-whers name themselves after their handlers, increasing the length based on how strong their bond is. If a watch-wher is stationed at a major Hold, they name themselves after the hold. They can also change their names if they change handlers.
