Azakana Lore in League of Legends
What Are Azakana?
Azakana are lesser demons in League of Legends lore, essentially the starting form that all demons begin as when they first come into existence. They are driven by negative feelings and thoughts of people, feeding on these emotions until their victims die, with each demon attracted to and associated with a specific emotion.
Origins & Connection to Ionia
These lesser demons were attracted to Ionia by the new-found emotions that emerged there, eventually becoming a major threat to the archipelago's inhabitants. The emotional turmoil and spiritual upheaval in Ionia created ideal feeding conditions for these parasitic spirits.
How They Work
Azakana are essentially emotional parasites that:
Feed on specific negative emotions (fear, despair, obsession, etc.)
Manipulate their victims to generate more of their preferred emotion
Grow stronger as they consume more emotional energy
Can possess or influence people
Start as weak lesser demons but can evolve into more powerful forms
Yone's Connection
When Yone died, he encountered an azakana in the Spirit Realm that had been hunting him. After defeating it, he awoke in the material realm wearing the demon's mask, with the azakana trapped within. Unable to remove the mask, he can now see other azakana in the world and hunts them using their names as words of power.
Demon Evolution
The term "azakana" is specifically Ionian for referring to lesser demons, meaning that even extremely powerful demons like Fiddlesticks, Tahm Kench, and Evelynn likely started as azakana before evolving. This suggests azakana are like the larval stage of demons.
