Karkrei Tribe (Desertborne Humans)

Overview

The Karkrei Tribe is a nomadic faction of Desertborne Humans who wander the haunted expanses of the Bone Dunes, a desolate land littered with the colossal remains of long-dead beasts. Known for their deep reverence of the dead and their unmatched skill in bonecrafting, the Karkrei walk a fine line between respect and fear. To their allies, they are keepers of ancestral wisdom and resourceful survivalists. To others, they are unsettling bone-worshipers, seen as cursed or touched by death itself.

Appearance

Desertborne Humans of the Karkrei Tribe are marked by sand-weathered skin, sharp features, and piercing eyes, often decorated with bone charms, paint, or ritual scars. Their garments are crafted from hides and bone plates, offering both protection and a ghostly, skeletal aesthetic.

Most notably, Karkrei warriors and shamans wear masks fashioned from the skulls of beasts or humans—each mask considered a sacred vessel for channeling ancestral power. These bone masks lend them a terrifying and otherworldly presence, making them resemble living revenants upon the sands.

Culture and Society

The Karkrei believe that the spirits of the fallen beasts still linger in their bones, whispering through the shifting winds and hollow ribs of the dunes. They see themselves as guardians of this sacred graveyard, bound to honor the departed and preserve their power.

Among the desert tribes, the Karkrei are regarded as the most spiritually oriented, holding a unique and powerful connection to the Desert Spirits. Their Bone-Speakers serve as shamans and mediums, able to interpret visions and commune with voices carried in bone and wind. Rituals of bone-breaking, chanting, and mask-wearing strengthen their bonds with the spirit world.

Beneath the Bone-Speakers are War-Leaders who guide their warriors, and Bonewrights, who craft weapons and ornaments from skeletal remains. Their society is steeped in reverence for death—not as an end, but as an eternal cycle in which they serve as intermediaries.

Territory and Camps

They mainly inhabit the Bone Dunes, a vast desert graveyard filled with colossal skeletons and shifting sands. They consider this entire region sacred, believing each bone uncovered is a gift of wisdom or power from the spirits. In this region, there are some crucial places for the tribe:

  • Bone Cisterns:
An underground network of caverns where the tribe constructs massive skeletal reservoirs to catch and store seasonal water that flows from the mountains. Lit by dim fires and bone sconces, these eerie chambers sustain the Karkrei through the arid months.

  • Echoing Rib-Cages:
A primary camp built within colossal ribcages of long-dead beasts. Covered with hides and woven bone panels, these shelters create haunting acoustics as the wind whistles through them, interpreted as the voices of ancestors.

  • The White Village:
A haunting settlement built entirely from the bones of ancient creatures, where the Karkrei dwell for several months each year. It serves as a sacred gathering place for rituals, ceremonies, and ancestral communion. The White Village is both awe-inspiring and unsettling, radiating an aura of reverence and mystery.

Resources, Water sources and Survival

The Karkrei survive through grim ingenuity and bonecraft:

  • Water: Collected and stored in the Bone Cisterns.

  • Food: Sustained by small-game hunting, limited foraging, and breaking open bones to consume the nutrient-rich marrow within.

  • Crafting: Masters of bonecraft, they produce durable weapons, tools, and armor from skeletal remains.

  • Trade: Their bone weapons and charms are valued for their strength and mysticism, though feared and sometimes avoided.

Military

The Karkrei are terrifying warriors, wielding bone-forged spears, jagged blades, and shields crafted from rib plates and skulls. Their skeletal armor and skull masks give them the appearance of an undead host, striking fear before battle begins.

More than just warriors, however, the Karkrei are feared for their bone warlocks, who wield dark spiritual magic drawn from communion with the dead. These warlocks can curse enemies, bind spirits, and invoke spectral terrors that shatter morale and sow chaos among their foes. Their combination of martial ferocity and sorcerous power makes them among the most dreaded desert fighters.

Relations

  • Khenan Raiders (Desertborne Humans):
The Karkrei hold deep contempt for the Khenan Raiders, dismissing them as uncultured barbarians who profane the desert with greed and bloodshed. Encounters rarely end peacefully—Karkrei war parties often kill Raiders on sight, considering it a cleansing act against dishonor.

  • Ashken Tribe (Desertborne Humans):
The Karkrei regard the Ashken with a wary respect, acknowledging their strength and wealth but also viewing their sedentary lifestyle as a detachment from the true essence of the desert. Relations remain formal and distant, built on mutual recognition rather than trust.

  • Shishan Tribe (Desertborne Humans):
The Shishan are seen with indifference, though practical necessity keeps relations cordial. As the desert’s main merchants, the Shishan provide trade routes through which the Karkrei exchange bonecrafts and relics for essential supplies.

  • Other Desert Tribes:
Relations with other tribes are largely indifferent. The Karkrei’s focus on transcendence, death, and the spirit world leaves them uninterested in the material disputes and rivalries that often define intertribal politics.

  • Sszarath Sandscale Dominion (Lizardfolk):
The Karkrei maintain a respectful neutrality with their lizardfolk neighbors. Both societies place great weight on spirituality, though they approach it differently. Occasional exchanges of knowledge and ritual practice occur, but these are rare and limited, bound by mutual recognition rather than alliance.

  • Other Races and Factions:
Due to the remoteness of the Bone Dunes, the Karkrei have little contact with outsiders. Rare encounters are met with suspicion, as the tribe sees foreign presence in their sacred lands as an intrusion upon the realm of the dead.

Reputation

The Karkrei are known as keepers of death and spirit-chosen mystics. To their allies, they are indispensable shamans and artisans, able to commune with powers beyond mortal reach. To others, they are unsettling, their masks, rituals, and warlocks marking them as dangerous outsiders.

Their enemies whisper that the Karkrei are half-living, half-dead, forever bound to the bones they worship.
