Nestled discreetly within Athkatla’s bustling Trade District, the Old Mage Hostel serves as a resting place and temporary refuge for itinerant arcanists, hedge wizards, and magical scholars passing through the City of Coin. Established nearly a century ago, the hostel is an unassuming, three-story stone building warded with subtle abjuration runes and protected from prying eyes by illusion magic. Its founding was quietly sanctioned by the Cowled Wizards, who prefer to keep transient spellcasters under a watchful but unobtrusive eye. Rooms are rented modestly, but occupancy is subject to registration with the Cowled Wizards, who occasionally post arcane bulletins or discreet job offers on the hostel’s message board. While overt spellcasting is still regulated under Athkatla’s strict laws, the hostel is one of the few places where spellcasters can find professional camaraderie, magical texts for trade, and a sympathetic ear—so long as they keep their ambitions quiet.
From the outside, the Old Mage Hostel appears plain and weatherworn, with faded wooden signage carved in a script that subtly shifts when viewed askance. Arcane symbols are etched into the lintels, disguised as decorative scrollwork. Inside, the air smells of parchment and incense. Candlelight glows softly over threadbare rugs, book-laden shelves, and quiet corners where cloaked figures converse in hushed tones.
