The Five Flagons is a well-appointed inn and performance house nestled in Athkatla’s Guards District, catering to travelers, actors, and affluent locals seeking a night of refined entertainment. Operated by the gregarious Kalas, a retired performer himself, the inn is best known for its downstairs theater—an intimate, candlelit venue where plays, ballads, and arcane demonstrations are staged for coin and acclaim. While the rooms above are clean and comfortable, it’s the stage that makes the Flagons famous, attracting bardic troupes, illusionists, and even Cowled-approved spellcasters looking to impress. Despite the city’s rigid laws on magic and vice, the Five Flagons thrives on a careful balance of charm, discretion, and occasional coin passed to the right inspectors. Rumors persist of secret patrons funding some of the more controversial performances.
The inn’s exterior is modest yet elegant: three stories of pale sandstone with ivy-wrapped balconies and carved wooden shutters painted in rich burgundy and gold. A signboard bearing five clinking flagons hangs above the wide oak door, always polished to a gleam. Inside, the air is warm with the scent of mulled wine, oil-lamps glow amber across dark wood furniture, and the soft strains of harp or lute music drift from the stage below. Rich curtains line the walls of the theater room, muffling outside noise and giving the space an almost reverent quiet. The crowd ranges from cloaked travelers to silken nobles, all drawn by the promise of story and spectacle.
