Born in the mountains in 1844, Hosea Matthews had a tumultuous upbringing marked by his father's sinful lifestyle. After a brief stint as a stage actor, he turned to a life of crime, becoming an outlaw. His life took a turn when he was saved from execution by a mysterious stranger, leading him to form a partnership with fellow outlaw Dutch van der Linde.
